'Smell Of Death' Research Could Help Recover Bodies In Disasters And Solve Crimes

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/08/090816211837.htm

During a speaking at the 238th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society there were early results on a new instrument used in Forensic Science. The new instrument is planned to be a portable device to help identify and pick up, a “smell of death,” or scientifically the smell released by decomposing chemicals released by the body. As of today the detection and recovery of bodies are done by Cadaver dogs, which are very expensive and time consuming to train. With a new portable device which can do the job faster and more accurately than these dogs there will be an increase in efficiency for recovering bodies in various situations. Not only would the bodies be identified easier as well as more efficiently but this new device will also give a very accurate “time of death” when it identifies and measures the various chemicals released from the body.

The portable smell of death device has been tested on pigs who are put through various environments so scientists can identify the different chemicals which are released and how much of them are released. A few of these that will significantly help scientists in finalizing this device are the gases Putrescine and Cadaverine. Using pigs scientists will tweek this device in identifying these certain compounds by placing pigs in humane conditions. After the device is complete it should be ably to identify and recover a body with the chemical odor it gives off and the time of death when the device can identify the different compounds released in different stages.

I thought this article was very interesting and well written. The fact that scientists are researching to create new and more efficient devices in the Forensic field that can help crime scene investigators more efficiently identify various parts of a crime scene shows how much technology is needed in this field.

3 – I like the description of the new instrument that can detect the “smell of death”
2 – I like the numerous capabilities (TOD and detection of death) of this new instrument as well as the indroduction of it to forensic science.
1 – I liked the idea of the device in the first place, this tool can lower budgets that were used for dogs, detect death and give an accurate TOD

2 – The article could have given examples if the device is effective/accurate on humans.
1 – The article could have stated how far the device can detect “death” from

1 – I learned about this device entirely, it seems like a great idea if it is accurate and effective, I was not aware that chemical odors that are released from a dead body can be detected.

The aspects of this review that were well written were his descriptions of how this new device will help forensic science, how it will be tested, and his opinion of the how this device will work. This review could have been made better by saying when this new device will be ready for testing and when it will be used, would they use it if there is no suspicion for a dead body around? I learned that this device will be able to estimate the time of death based on the compounds around the body.

wow this article blew my mind.

1 this would be a remarkable invention because it effieciently replaces the use of canines. which is somewhat questionable and expensive and time consuming

2 it is also much more beneficial it even estimates a time of death how special

3 this also informed me of the significance that chemicals and smells play in the recovery of bodies in disasters or murders

1 this article could have given examples of tests composed on human cadavers

2 perhaps it should have gone into greater depth of how it can detect and decode the chemicals

1 this sounds like a great idea i never realized why forensics scientists use dogs atc rime scenes. now i found out its to detect these chemicals in dead bodies. fortunately now we have a superior alternative to using dogs. this was a very good and informative article

1) I like the fact that the members of the forensic science community are always looking for innovation in there field.
2) This new "smell of death" machine will be much more cost effective in the long run.
3)I like the fact that a machine can determine something until now left up to the expertise of a human.

1) I would like to have learned more about how exactly the device does what it does.
2) I would of liked to now just how well the machine works. Ex) Two bodies with different times of death lay next to each other. Will the machine work?

1) I would have liked to learn more about just how this device works, how well it works and how expensive it is going to be.

1 I like how this instrument will be a big upgrade in technology and replace dogs and their expenses.
2 I like how the instrument will be able to give you critical info that a dog couldn't
3 I like how this new tool i versatile and can do not only the job of the dog but the forensic scientists as well

1- The article could have talked about whether this devise is going to completely render the dogs useless
2. It could have stated how the devise worked.

1 I learned about how technology is advancing and I want to check to see if other devises like this one will come out to help forensic scientist with other matters.

1. I really like the description of the new instrument that can detect the “smell of death 2

2. I liked the idea of the device, this tool can lower budgets that were used for dogs, detect death and give an accurate TOD

3. I like the numerous capabilities TOD and detection of death of this new instrument, as well as the indroduction of this instrument to forensic science.

1.This article could have maybe given examples if the device is accurate/effective on humans.

2.This article also could have stated how far the device can start to detect death from.

1 – From this article I learned about this new impressive device, it seems like a great idea as long as it is accurate and effective, I was completely unaware that the chemical odors released from a dead body can be detected.

1. I like how the new instrument to smell death works
2. I like the various uses of this new machine. its cool how they can tell how long the body has been dead using this machine.
3. I also like how the budget of this machine is much less that the dogs used now.

2. The article could have described how accurately this machine is.
1. It also could have told at what distance this machine can start picking up the scent of death.

1.I learned that at different stages of death different chemicals are released which can tell a forensic scientists approximetely how long a body has been dead.

1. The review of the article clearly explained the purpose of the devise and presented a good description of it.
2. I liked how the article explained the benefits of using the new devise, rather than using cadaver dogs, which are inconvenient to maintain and not as effective.
3. I also like how the review emphasized the cost effectiveness of using the Smell of death devise as opposed to cadaver dogs.
1. I wish there had been example of how and in what specific situations the devise would have been especially advantageous.
2. I would like to know if the devise has been used in actual cases yet or if it is still in the phases of development.
1. This is the fist time I’ve ever heard of the “Smell of Death” devise. I learned that scientists could use the gases Cadaverine and Putrescine to determine an accurate time of death much more efficiently than using insects or doing a full autopsy.

There were many aspects of this review that I thought were well written. The first part that I thought was very written was his description of the new device. It allowed me to picture it in my mind. Second would be how the review talks about the old way to find the smell of a dead body and how it is not very efficient or affordable. Third, the description of how the device works, it was very interesting that by using the chemicals to find the body and determine its TOD.

I would like to learn more about the process of using this new device and how easy or hard it is to operate. I would have also liked to learn more about how this new device was discovered, and maybe what scientists and their fields contributed to the discovery.

From this article I learned that now crime scene investigators or even police will not have to be dependent on cadaver dogs to “sniff out” the body. They can now use this device which is much more affordable and accurate.

This article was very interesting. It was well written, and told the reader numerous things about the device.
Three things i liked about this article were:
1. That there is a cool instrument that can help determine death.
2. That the writer explained the various interesting ways that this instrument could be used for forensic scientists.
3. That this device can give a time of death, and that it can cut budgets for forensic scientists.

There were a few things that could have been strengthened in this article. They were:
1. This article could have more clearly explained what kind of time range and how accurate the Time of death indicator is.
2. HOw effective this device is on humans and if there are different responses to different races/genders.

I learned a lot about this article. Firstly, i learned about this device.I had never heard about it before, and it was interesting to hear bout this great idea that can practically "smell death."

Good Things
1. This was a very interesting and new topic which I have never heard of before and was intrigued.
2. The review was well written with all the necessary information to understand what exactly this instrument is
3. I find it cool how the device can even tell time of death based on the chemical released.

Bad Things
1. There were no human examples, just pigs so it can not be told for sure if it is going to help locate human bodies.
2. There is some extra information that was left out that could have been added but this is very minor.

Interesting
1. I had no idea an invention like this was possible and I am sure it will help law enforcement recover more and more dead bodies that have been left buried for years.

Three Aspects
- I like this new innovation of technology, and how it will replace the expenses of dogs.
- I liked how the article showed the importance of smell in recovering bodies in investigations.
- I liked how the "smell of death" machine will evidently be very cost effective.

Two suggestions
- The article could have given more examples of the way to device could be used on humans.
- I would have liked the article to go into detail of when the device might have been useful.

One thing I learned
-I learnbed about this new innovative device which seems to be very effective. It was interesting to learn how about chemical odors being released from a dead body
