Infra-red helps find hidden tattoo

There is a new use for infra-red cameras that can help Forensic Scientists solve crimes. Forensic scientists look at tattoos as a way of identifying suspects in investigations, but criminals can easily have them changed or updated. Scientist at the University of Derby in England say that they can use infra-red cameras to determine if tattoos are originals or if they have been altered. Using a digital camera sensitive to infra-red, researchers can see if there are hidden layers or changes to the original tattoo deeper in the skin. In an experiment researchers were able to see that a student who had a tattoo of a butterfly on his back was actually covering up an original tattoo of an imp. With this new infra-red technology scientist will be able to find determine if there suspects were able to alter there tattoos to possibly get away with the crimes the committed.

Three aspects that were well presented:
Travis presented the topic well in his review; he chose an interesting topic and broke down the process of using an infra-red camera into understandable steps.

Two suggestions:
It could have been interesting to learn if this new technology had actually solved a case and also information could have been added as to where this technology is being utilized most.

One aspect that impressed/was unaware of:
I didn’t realize these cameras could be used to uncover an original tattoo, the technology used to solve crimes is becoming more and more advanced and this is very impressive. Now that this infra-red camera is going to be used it will make criminal’s harder to disguise themselves.

This was an interesting article. One thing i enjoyed, was that it described a new way of using infrared cameras to solve crimes. Also, it was interesting that tattoos, even if they were removed cosmetically, can still be seen in the deeper parts of the skin. Another interesting things about this article, is that these cameras can determine if suspects altered their tattoos, which are sometimes a way of identifying people.
One thing that needs work in this article, is a further explanation of the infrared camera works, and how the pictures are taken. Another thing is that it would be a good idea is to give an example of when a criminal had a tattoo removed, and the case study for it.
One thing that I learned from this article, was how infrared cameras can pinpoint cover-ups in tattoos from a suspected criminal.

in this article, i liked the idea of infrared cameras to determine whether there were prior tattoos that were changed in order to get away with a crime. looking for prior tattoos is a very creative idea which i also liked. the example and founder of this method of confirming suspects also made this process more understandable. however, this article mentions no further background to crimes or how tattoos would be seen on a suspect. This article could have also described how these lasers work and what they show on a person. overall i learned that infrared cameras can detect body art that had been removed, before reading this article i was unaware of this.

This was a very interesting article because the topic was quite appealing. Using cameras to tell if a tattoo was altered is really cool and advanced. It is amazing to think that an altered tattoo can no longer cover up a crime like it used to. The article was well written as well with some detail. The article could have explained more about the cameras and how exactly they can tell if a tattoo was altered. I learned that it was possible to tell what kind of tattoo someone had even after it was altered.

Three aspects which I found interesting were that people can alter tattoos and an Infrared camera can still identify an original, even with new ink the old ink of a tattoo is seen different in an infrared camera, and reseachers have tested and proved this method of identifying tattoos with an infrared camera.

Two suggests I would make were to explain how this method of identying tattoos is done. I would also suggest to state how people would try to get around this now that they can hear their tattoos can be identified.

One aspect I really liked was the kid that had an original tattoo of an imp but was covering it up with a butterfly tattoo. This shows that this technique is a valid method for identifying tattoos and helps to prove its usefulness.

The aspects of this review that were well presented were how he went through why such technology is needed, how he described how the technology is used, and how he gave an example of the technology in use. However, to improve this review, he should include how people are chosen for this technology to be used upon. In other words, how do they identify the suspects where this technology is necessary? Also, he should include how this technology works. From this review, I learned that getting rid of a tattoo or placing another one over it does not make it disappear completely.

I liked in this article how Travis was able to break it down. He clearly explained how even if suspects have had their tattoos removed the camera can still pick up the ink on the deeper part of the skin. I also liked how the article described how if the suspect altered his or her tattoo the camera could show the original tattoo underneath. Two things that I would have improved in this article are how the infrared camera works and also how they decide to use this technology on a suspect, like in what cases would such technology be used. From this article I learned that no matter if you remove your tattoo or if you cover over it with a larger tattoo the original can always be seen underneath.

The review to the article was well presented, interesting, and easy to follow, allowing the reader to understand the breakdown of infrared cameras.

I believe that Travis could have added more information as to where this technology is used most, aswell as some detail into if this has ever greatly helped the success of a case.

I found it remarkable that these cameras could find both covered tattoos aswell as erased ones. Seeing the show gangland has taught me that this technology could and probably is being used to find connected criminals in gangs who have covered up their signs with other ink symbols.

Presented well: This article was well written and concise. He did a good job of detailing the reason and use for this new infrared technique. He also provided a specific example of the technology’s forensic use: a person who tried to deceive law enforcers by covering up a tattoo, but failed because of the infrared technology.

Suggestions: I would like to see further details about how this infrared technology works. Also, it would be interesting to know how often criminals use alterations and additions to cover up distinctive tattoos and how often the infrared technology successfully identifies criminals.

Surprising/ interesting: It is very interesting to see how infrared technology can help criminologists get past deceptively altered tattoos. This is a great breakthrough in forensic technology.

I found this article very interesting. One part of the review that I saw as very well presented was the certain tools, such as infra-red cameras, used to determine if a tattoo is old or new and if it is covering something else. I also liked how the review talked about what could be hidden under the new tattoo and why people may choose to cover the older tattoo with something else. A third part that I enjoyed was that how this was done was explained, how the scientists could examine each layer to determine whether certain parts of the tattoo were covering something else that could link the individual to a crime.

One suggestion I have for this article would to possibly state some cases where this technology has been used in investigating a case. Also, what kind of tattoos would people want to cover up? I know the review said and “imp” but I don’t know what that is. Also, I think the review could have used a little more about the process of this technology and what tools and instruments are used besides an infra-red camera.

One impressed me the most was the fact that scientists can use infra-red cameras to examine the layers of the human skin and determine if a tattoo is covering another tattoo and reveal what that other tattoo is. This new technology can be helpful in so many ways. The one way that I could think of is in gang related crimes. Many gangs will have tattoos of their gang names or crests and some gang members may want to cover up these signs after they have done something. This technology will help prevent the covering up of these signs.

I personally thought this was a very interesting article. One thing I enjoyed, was that it described a new way of using infrared cameras to solve crimes as well as how the article was presented and the details describing how the technology is used. Also, it was interesting that tattoos, even if they were removed cosmetically, can still be seen in the deeper parts of the skin. Another interesting things about this article, is that these cameras can determine if suspects ever attempted to alter their tattoo. However, I think the article could be improved, if the summary included a further explanation of how the infrared camera works, for example how the pictures are taken. One other thing that could be improved is that it would be a good idea is to give an example of when a criminal had a tattoo removed, and how it relates back to forensics and crime solving. One important thing that I learned from this article, was how infrared cameras can pinpoint cover-ups in tattoos from a suspected criminal, and also that getting rid of a tattoo is close to impossible because it never disappears completely

This article was very interesting and informative. Te article showed just how important technology is to solving crimes. Also I really loved the fact that the camera was able to pick up on a tattoo that had been changed. In addition the way the article explained just how the cameras helped to solve the crime was awesome. However the article did have some faults, more insight to how the camera determines the old part of the tattoo from the new one would have been helpful in understanding the process. Further more insight into how to avoid the tattoo being detected or picked up on if any would have been good. What impressed me about this article was that i had no idea that cameras had the ability to determine one tat from another.
