Court Told of Possible Origin of DNA on a Police Baton By Kareem Fahim Feb 3, 2010

The news article “Court told of Possible Origin of DNA on a Police Baton” is a story about how a Police officer is on trial for sexually assaulting a Brooklyn man. It was said that he used his Police Baton to beat the man and assault him sexually. In Court Sarah Phillips a DNA specialist claimed that there was blood and genetic mix on the baton that could directly link the baton to the man who was beaten, Michael Mineo. Three New York Police officers are facing chargers. So far this piece of evidence seems it will be the key factor to put them away. Still, one of the lawyers for the officers stated that this find was “meaningless”. Phillips said that she was able to find the blood and DNA by swabbing the retractable portion of the Baton. She said that the DNA on the baton came from at least three contributors. This evidence helps prove that the Officers sexually assaulted Mineo by inserting the baton between his buttocks. It looks as if the police officers will be convicted due to this find in DNA. DNA has become extremely effective in solving cases.

This article review was very well written. I found it intresting how the DNA "mix" is what led to the charges against the officers. Also it was interesting to read an article where the system was working against police offciers. In addition I found it odd that 3 police officers would sexually assualt a man. One part of the article that could have been beter was the scientific explanation to what was actually found of the baton exactly. Also i would have like to have found what exactly will be happening to thesse offcers. ma

3 good things about this article:
I was intrigued by this case in the way that DNA evidence was used to find proof of sexual assault.
The article was succinct and thorough.
I thought it was interesting that 3 officers would do something as disgusting as this and I'd like to know what the prognosis on the case is.

2 things I'd like to know are:
The setting in which this took place- were there witnesses to this crime?
I'd also like to know how the blood on the baton can be linked specifically to a crime of sexual nature

I didn't know:
A mix of blood or DNA samples on an officer's baton can lead to a conviction of sexual assault.

This article was very interesting because it was about a police officer getting arrested, which isn’t something you hear every day. One thing that I enjoyed about this article was the close relationship it has to what we’re studying in class. It described how a DNA specialist linked the case to the man who was beaten by the blood and genetic mix found on the baton. Another thing I found to be well presented was the information regarding case. An example of this is how the DNA specialist was able to prove there were three contributors to the crime, which happened to all be New York Police officers. A third thing I found interesting was the fact that one of the lawyers for the officers stated that this find was “meaningless.” However, one part of the presentation I found disturbing was the fact that this was a sexual assault done by three male police officers unto another man. It scares me to think that even people who are part of the law, such as police officers can be a threat onto society as well. One aspect that impressed me was the fact that this case didn’t get that much attention through the press even though I find it to be an extremely upsetting case.

The review for this article was good because it covered the essentials of the story. I thought it was interesting, however, that the article tells about one officer sexually assaulting the individual, but three officers were being charged. I also found it interesting that the baton (usually a symbol of police power) is what led to their demise. I thought that the review could have been better if it had gone into greater detail. Also, it could have had a link posted to actually read the article.

The review was very interesting. It covered a different aspect of cases, in that it was a police officer whom was on trial instead of a criminal. The evidence was also surprising especially since it was the baton that was the deal breaker.
I would have liked a link to the article so that I could actually find it directly to read, I also would have liked more of a overview of what was found on the baton. I can guess what could have been on there, but clarification would be nice.
I learned that truely EVERYTHING can be considered as evidence. This opens the window for anything and everything at the crime scene.

After reviewing this article, I came to the conclusion that it was a very well written summary of a very interesting article. I thought that the most interesting part of the article was that the law enforcement agencies are doing everything in their power to bring justice to the streets and putting away anyone who commits a crime and deserves to be put in jail, even if it is their own police. I thought that artie did a good job of presenting this article in full detail and explaining clearly the events that took place and what actions will be taken to those who committed the crime. One aspect of the article that impressed me was how artie explained the story of the incident that happened thoroughly and clearly.

This review was very well written. I thought that it isvery suprising that the policce officers did not get away from the crime, because usually the police is above the law. This just shows as well how far technology has really come and it is trully amazing. I also found it interesting that the baton is what led to their troubles. It was disturbing that the police officers would committ this hanis crime, and try and get away with it.

One thing that I liked how the police officer is the one being arrested not the one arresting. Another thing I liked was the details on the case and how the baton was the crucial evidence. In addition the fact that this was done by three police officers was no kind of weird. One thing that I would change is what exactly was the "genetic mix" on the baton. Another thing I would have liked to know was were there any witnesses to this crime. I thought it was interesting that they were able to get all three of their DNA's off of the baton

This review was very interesting and well written because it was on an interesting topic, it had all the necessary information, and it explained the application of forensic science. In this case the police officers are the ones who are guilty and they will have to be punished for their actions. I thought you could have elaborated on what was going to happen to these officers after doing such a terrible thing and more about the man and the officers such as why they got into this in the first place. I learned that DNA evidence doesn't only put criminals away, it also convicts the people you thought were out to protect you.
