Forensic Breakthrough: Recovering Fingerprints on Fabrics Could Turn Clothes Into Silent Witnesses

Currently a new technique in fingerprinting is being researched by forensic scientist in Scotland. This new Technique would allow the fingerprint of a suspect to be lifted from an article of clothing, something that has not been done before. For the past thirty years a team located at the University of Abertay has studied fingerprints and this new method seems to be successful.

The process in which this is done requires the use of the elements Zinc and Gold. This is know as VMD or Vacuum Metal Deposition, however this process has been around for some time. Joanna Fraser, a forensic scientist currently studying this method explains. "The research uses fine layers of metals to display fingerprints people may have left on fabrics, something which is far harder to do with soft surfaces. The technique has been around since the 1970s and is used on many surface but was never widely used on fabrics.”

I think that this new technique of fingerprinting can greatly help in the field of forensic science as well as law enforcement when it come to catching criminals.

I liked that he explained the importance of the method by telling about how it could be used in the future. It helped me understand what the point of developing the method was. I also liked that he used a quote form the actual article, which most people do not include in their reviews. I thought that he summarized the article well, making it interesting and including most of the important points. And introducing the main researchers in the study.
I thought that the summary could have included more details about the process its self so we could understand exactly what they were doing. As it was we only knew what the reason for the method was. I wanted to know how this method was different the normal means of gathering fingerprints. I also thought that there could have been a criticism of the article since he didn’t mention the quality of the article at all. I’m sure that there were a few things he could have criticized.
I was impressed by the fact that fingerprints can now be taken from clothes and that this was never done before. I’m sure that there are many crimes in which a perpetrator has touched a cloth and left their fingerprint. Also fingerprints could be retrieved from the inside of cloth gloves.

Three things that were well done were properly quoting things directly taken from the article, remembering to add the link of the article, and making the review a good length and straightforward. Two things that could've been better would have been to first maybe pick a different article because someone has already done a review of this article on this blog, and another thing would've been to add your opinion of the new forensic breakthrough at the end.
One thing i learned from this was that recovering fingerprints from fabrics has been around since the 1970s.
