How 3D laser scanners are changing crime scene investigations

In recent forensic news, laser scanners have been proven to show effective ways of investigating crime scenes. Crime scene investigators have been using 3D laser scanners increasingly as an effective and efficient means of enhancing their crime scene investigation capabilities. The laser provides for effective responsibilities as it is shown to be an effective way to quickly document crime scenes so the evidence can then quickly be sent for lab analysis. A typical laser scan of a crime scene takes no longer than ten minutes.Prep time scales with the size and complexity of the scene, so a multi-room house would take longer. The scan itself takes minutes.
So how important is this new scanner to our society?  Well, this means that potentially more crime scenes could be processed in less field hours. Not only that, but 3d scanners can be used in documenting a car collusion quickly, which could help reduce potential officer injuries. Roadside accidents are among the most common ways officers are injured on the job. Cutting down on the time spent to collect the evidence could not only help lower the injury risk, but cut down on the traffic.
The 3D scanner proves that our society is making great steps toward technological advancements. The 3D scanner makes it so that evidence collected can be stored digitally and then used at any time investigators need. The 3D scanner gives a more “CSI effect,” wowing jurors in courtrooms, that the effectiveness and efficiency is much like what they see on TV.
I think that as a society we are making major steps in a good direction when it comes to medicine and technology. This new invention proves that we are evolving quickly and becoming more efficient and smarter with our ideas. I would have liked to learn more about the actual 3D laser itself and what it can do, I think that could have been beneficial to readers to learn more about the laser itself and what it does specifically does.

Kathleen did a good job of reviewing the article, “How 3D Laser Scanners Are Changing Crime Scene Investigations.” As a reader, I enjoyed the conversational voice of the review that Kathleen wrote, although it also managed to maintain a professional tone. I did not realize that roadside accidents are the most common reason for officer injuries, in which the 3D laser scanner can greatly improve the time that these type of crime scenes are processed. Kathleen also is able to describe the 3D laser scanner in relative detail in order to help the readers understand, even with the limited amount of information.

Although the review was well written, the inclusion of quotes directly from the original article would have broken up the reading. Also, it would have been nice if there was more details that expanded the existing explanation on why laser scanning is “effective and efficient.” Otherwise, Kathleen’s review is fair to the article.

I was particularly impressed by the advancements and the rapid evolution of today’s technology, which is obvious in the creation of the 3D laser scanners. It can save investigators valuable time in the physical crime scene, and in turn, they can spend more time in the laboratories to solve the crimes and figure out new methods to increase the speeds of the processes that already exist.

I read the article called “How 3D Laser Scanners Are Changing Crime Scene Investigations” which was critiqued by Kathleen. I think she did a good job of summarizing the ways that 3D scanners could be very efficient in police investigations and how more of the police are using it. I liked how she also included the ways that 3D scanners are helping prevent police injuries during investigations and gave the example of a car accident. She made good points such as how this invention shows that we are improving and how as a society, it shows that we are taking a “major steps in a good direction when it comes to medicine and technology.”
I think that the article can improve by adding in quotes from several of the police investigators who have used it to get a feel of how it actually works and their opinion of it. The article only talks about the good things that can come out of 3D scanner so it might have been useful to get a list of cons when using the scanner (is there a place that it can’t be used for some reason?,etc.) It would be good to get an actual idea of how it looks like and how to operate the technology.
I also feel as if this new tech can definitely aid in police investigations and shows how much technology has improved over the years to make tasks much simpler and less time consuming. It was an interesting article that taught me abe the uses of 3D scanners in investigations.

I enjoyed reading Kathleen’s review and the article “How 3D Laser Scanners Are Changing Crime Scene Investigations.” First, I liked how she thoroughly explained the background on laser scanners because it gave the reader an idea of how it functions and its importance. Also, I liked how she stated a question at the beginning of the second paragraph and then answered it after because it flowed nicely and captured the reader’s attention while questioning the reader at the same time. Lastly, I liked how she clearly states how much of an importance this piece of technology could be to future investigations and how this signifies an advancement in technology. I really liked her review on the article because it gave provided a background on the topic and left the reader thinking about the future of technology.
Even though this review was very good in its own ways, it had some minor flaws. First, it would have been better if she provided more specific information about the potential impacts of this piece of technology, not just general, so we would fully understand its importance. Also, in every good article, there is a positive side and a negative side. She failed to mention the downsides to this technology which would be useful information to the reader.
I learned a lot from reading this article and review. First off, I learned what the laser scanner was and how it functioned. Also, I learned how important laser scanners are to investigations because they minimize the time spend on the investigation and provide a different view on the evidence. Knowing this information will change my view and perception because I am now more well informed on technology used in investigations and its potential impacts. Overall, I enjoyed reading this review and article because of the interesting information it provided and hope for the future of technology.

I think she explained very well that the laser helps to quickly documents crime scenes, so evidence can rapidly be sent to the lab. Also she described really well why the 3D laser scanner is important to society, which is because shortening the time it takes to collect evidence will help to lower the risk of injury in a car collision crime scene. Lastly what was presented well was that the 3D scanner can wow the jurors in the courtroom. Overall I think this review was very good.
A suggestion I would give to improve this review is to put quotes from the article into the review. Another suggestion I would give is to say how long it usually takes to document crime scenes without the laser to show how much the laser cuts down on the time.
I was surprised at the technological advancement of the 3D scanner and how easy it makes documenting the crime scene. Also I learned that when you use the 3D scanner then the evidence collected from the scanner can be digitally stored so investigators can use it whenever they need it.

Kathleen explained her article very well. She explained what the 3D scanners could do and how efficient it would be for law enforcement. She goes into more details on how these 3D scanners are helping record crime scenes and how quickly this evidence can be sent to the lab. Kathleen also uses an example of a car crash to help paint the picture of what these 3D scanners can actually do. “The 3D scanner proves that our society is making great steps toward technological advancements.”, says Kathleen. With Kathleen including that last part, it allows the readers to think about what is to come.

Even though Kathleen shared all of the pros for this new device, it would have been interesting to read about the negatives and how long it took for this to come into action. Another thing that would have been nice to add would be quotes from the people who use this device daily and how it makes their lives easier.

Overall, Kathleen did an excellent job at explaining the article. I chose this article review to comment on since we are in a new age of technology and reading up on new technology that benefits us is very interesting. This review was for informational.
