MH17 Flight Shot Down By Surface-to-air Missile in Ukraine, Say Investigators

Current Event: Carlie Hoffer
Feb 8, 2016
This article is about the Malaysian Airline Flight 17 which was shot down over Ukraine about a year ago. Through forensic analysis it was concluded that the flight was deliberately brought down by “surface-to-air” missiles. A missile struck the front of the plane killing all three people in the cockpit instantly. The plane then crashed within 90 seconds and killed close to 300 people on board. Although the wreckage was dispersed over 50 kilometers, forensic detectives were able to find most of the remains and then reconstruct what happened to the aircraft. The weapons system was determined through fragments of wreckage and the crew member’s bodies. Through this forensic analysis, detectives were able to determine that the explosion was not due to weapons on board the aircraft. Forensic scientists were also able to recover cellphones on board which showed that there were no texts or videos taken during the flights fall to the ground, indicating that passengers were unaware of the attack.
At the time of the crash, conflict between Russia and Ukraine was increasing rapidly suggesting that perhaps there should have been more flight regulations for commercial aircrafts when traveling in this airspace. In addition, the harm of innocent civilians as the result of failing to identify whether or not the aircraft was linked to the military is now a concern to humanity. Forensic analysis was able to successfully trace the missile to its source, eliminating the anonymous nature of the strike. Also, forensic evidence was able to conclude that all passengers were unaware that the attack was going to happen due to the evidence found from the cellphones on board. This may bring some comfort to victims families that they had no idea of the events that happened.
This article was thorough in its forensic analysis and was able to clearly state and evaluate the events that occurred. It provided sufficient detail about the reconstruction of the scene and what evidence they were able to draw from doing so. However, it would have been good for more context to be provided regarding the situation between Russia and the Ukraine and why there have been such tense relations between the two nations. Overall, the article did an adequate job at stating the importance of the crash of Flight 17 and how forensics were used to determine what had occurred.

Carlie, I thought you did a great job giving details about the article such as how through forensic analysis, we are able to figure out that the plane was taken down by a missile which I had no idea at all. Another great thing you did was describing how the missile had hit the plane and what it had done to it. I also think your summary was perfect, it wasn’t too long or too short. Even though you did a great job, there were few places of error I noticed. One improvement that I noticed was if you described how forensic detectives were able to come to this conclusion and if any action has been taken against Russia and Ukraine for the missile. Another thing I noticed that needed improvement was describing how the evidence that the forensic investigators had collected done to help the case and make them get to their conclusion. This changed my impression on what I had thought about what had happened to the Malaysia flight because she told me information that I had never known about the whole incident. This also changed my view on the power that forensic analysis can do to a case.

Carlie wrote a great review summarizing the article about Malaysian Airlines Flight 17 that was speculated to have been shot down over Ukraine almost two years ago. She gave fantastic background information as to why the plane may have been taken down: armed clashes between Ukrainian and Russian forces. I agree with her that the airspace should have been restricted over the conflict region and flights diverted. Perhaps the insurgents thought the plane was not a passenger vehicle but a threat to their cause and they decided to make a preemptive strike. I enjoyed her interpretation of how the events occurred. Her reconstruction of the events left me very satisfied. I also liked how she mentioned the lack of cellphone usage and how that indicated that no one was aware of the attack before the explosion. I figured that this meant that the pilot did not announce that there was impending danger. Also, the depressurized cabin and lack of oxygen probably killed most people before they could reach their cellphones.

Although I liked the article a lot, I think there is room for improvement. I had a lot of unanswered questions. I still do not know where the missile came from. Carlie said that forensic analysis was able to trace the missile to its source but did not mention what the source was. Was it a Russian missile? Was it shot from Ukrainian forces? Rebel forces? Separatists? North Koreans? I would also like to know the significance of the crash of this plane. Carlie mentioned that the article said that the crash was important in some fashion but I do not believe she actually clarified what it was exactly. Another thing she could have explained more about was the techniques regarding how the forensic analysts figured out that it was a surface-to-air missile as opposed to air-to-air or an internal explosion that took down the plane. The article had a lot of information that I think would have enhanced Carlie’s review.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this article and learning more about the crash of the MH17 Flight. I finally found out that it was a surface-to-air missile that was fired into the cockpit of the plane thus causing it to crash, killing all 298 people on board. I would think that after the MH370 Flight ‘disappeared’ just a few months before, that Malaysian Airlines would take more precautions in their subsequent itineraries. At the very least, they could have prohibited flights over war-torn countries as did Korean Air and British Airways. Clearly, this article review inspired me to do more research on this subject and I am glad I did.

Although Carlie is one of my closest friends, which means I am somewhat biased, I believe she did a good job of summarizing the article that she chose for her current event. She did a really good job of summarizing the speculations as to how the Malaysian Airlines Flight 17 had gone down about two years ago. In addition to this, she was able to provide a lot of good background information on the tensions between the Ukraine and Russia over the last few years. Carlie gives a clear explanation, with supporting evidence and reasoning, of how the events of this plane disaster could have occurred. Carlie, in general, communicated information to her audience very clearly and did not overload us with information that did not support her summary and main point. I had a very easy time comprehending Carlie’s review and I enjoyed how she incorporated her own interpretation of the Malaysian Airlines Flight 17 events.
I think Carlie could have done a better job of getting more into how forensics played a role in the investigation of the flight mystery; she only briefly describes how forensic analysis was able to trace back the missile to its source. In addition to that, I would like to have read possibly a direct quote from the article or from an expert to establish more of a sense of credibility.
I enjoyed reading Carlie’s review and the article itself. I learned a lot more about the Malaysian Airlines Flight 17 than I had known before. I am a frequent flyer because I travel a lot with my family so I think it is really important to stay on top of topics like this. Thank you, Carlie, for further educating us on this interesting event.

Carlie did a great job at reviewing the article, "MH17 Flight Shot Down By Surface-to-air Missile in Ukraine, Say Investigators". She provided a lot of background knowledge that the reader might not had known. She talked about how the plane went down and brought up the missile and where it hit the plane. Her description of what took place was very helpful as well. Carlie included a lot of data but one piece of information that would have made this even better would have been where the missile came from. Carlie briefly mentions that forensics analysis knew where it came from but did not share it. Her summary was great but did not include any quotes that would have empowered this even more. I did not know much about the attack so it was great to learn about what happened and what forensics can do. Overall, she did a very good job presenting the information at hand. http://www.forensicmag.com/news/2015/10/mh17-flight-shot-down-surface-air-missile-ukraine-say-investigators Augenstein, Seth. I think Carlie did a great job in summarizing the article. She gave a good background on what happened to the plane and the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The review was really interesting to read and gave great examples of how the forensic scientists found out what happened. Like the missile was struck in the front of the plane so the whole cockpit of three people were dead instantly. They also found out that no one used their cell phone on the plane to record anything during the attack and therefore it was unexpected. She also gave just enough information that consisted of the most important facts/supporting details and so reading the review wasn’t overwhelming with too much information.

One thing she could have improved on is telling the audience more clearly why the event of the Malaysian Airline Flight 17 crash is significant/important. She could have also used some quotes from the article to give more examples and help explain her point.

When I first heard about the crash I was sure that it wasn’t an accident and now there is evidence to prove that it was indeed an unexpected attack. Overall, this review was interesting and done well.

Carlie did an awesome job summarizing the article. She did a great job giving background on the flight conflict between Russia and Ukraine and I was very interested in the topic because i had not heard a lot about it prior to reading this article and carlie's review. Carlie did a great job giving informative and opinionated information which made me feel very involved in the piece. I am very eager to learn more about the accident, and Carlie's article choice was awesome. The article did a nice job of explaining how scientists figured out what happened and how. After further investigations, the scientists realized that no one used their phones on the plane to record anything during the attack, making it very unexpected. Carlie had a lot of information, but one piece that stuck out was where the missile had come from. One thing that could have helped Carlie's report would be quotes or a little more detail on how Forensic Science played a huge role in this issue. Quotes would have made this piece even more moving and interesting. Overall, great job, Carlie!!!!!

Carlie, I really enjoyed your review of the article “MH17 Flight Shot Down By Surface-to-air Missile in Ukraine, Say Investigators.” There were a few things that stood out. One, you did a great job summarizing the article. You provided great background information on what happened to the plane and on the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Two, your description of what actually happened was very helpful as well. I liked how you talked about what forensic analysts recovered from the wreckage and what they are doing with it. Three, I liked how you descriptive you were when explaining how the missile hit the plane and took it down.

Although your review was great, there are a few things you could do to make it even better. One, It would have been nice if you had included a quote or two from the article. This would have easily strengthened your review by providing greater authority from an expert in the field. Two, you briefly mention that forensic analysis was used to determine the source of the missile, but you do not mention the source. It would have been nice to know where the missile came from.

Prior to reading your review, I didn’t much about this missile taking down the plane. It was great to learn about this event because it seems that experts are still putting together what actually happened. You would think they would restrict flights over areas in war. Again, I really enjoyed your review.
