“'Accidental' X-Mas Eve Shooting Ruled Homicide After Autopsy, Girlfriend Arrested.”

Augenstein, Seth. “'Accidental' X-Mas Eve Shooting Ruled Homicide After Autopsy, Girlfriend Arrested.” Forensic Magazine, 29 Dec. 2017, www.forensicmag.com/news/2017/12/accidental-x-mas-eve-shooting-ruled-homicide-after-autopsy-girlfriend-arrested.

In Seth Augenstein’s article “'Accidental' X-Mas Eve Shooting Ruled Homicide After Autopsy, Girlfriend Arrested,” he discusses a case in which Dominique Kendra Wix was charged with murder in the killing of her boyfriend, Akoya Skeith. Wix originally claimed that after an argument her boyfriend began to reach for his gun and accidentally shot himself. However, after further investigation through an autopsy, police stated that “the angle at which the fatal single shot must have been fired – disproved the story of a self-inflicted wound.” Augenstein discusses how the distance from which the gun was shot would affect the size of the wound which would also help in determining whether Wix told the truth about what happened. Police also stated that once being brought into police headquarters, Wix gave two different stories, the first “indicated that the two were in their upstairs bedroom when Skeith made an aggressive move toward her while wearing the gun his waistband – so she grabbed her own 9mm handgun from an end table and shot him” while the “second story then claimed she had only pointed the weapon at Skeith in a “playing” manner and accidentally pulled the trigger – and there was no argument or fight at the time.” Wix was eventually arrested and then she was charged with manslaughter as well.
Augenstein’s article describes the importance of having such knowledge of gunshot wounds during an autopsy helps in determining the cause of the wound. Having this ability is important to modern society as there have been many attacks and shootings such as the one described in the article. Investigators are able to determine an approximate distance from where the gun was shot based upon the size of the wound which can also help in preventing false explanations or accusations.

Seth Augenstein’s article “'Accidental' X-Mas Eve Shooting Ruled Homicide After Autopsy, Girlfriend Arrested,” although explaining the case, I thought that it would have been more helpful if he were to provide more information regarding the case as well as what other experts have said. However, Augenstein’s article provided a detailed explanation regarding the examination of gunshot wounds during an autopsy which helped in better understanding the process.

Michelle did a very good job reviewing this article titled “'Accidental' X-Mas Eve Shooting Ruled Homicide After Autopsy, Girlfriend Arrested” written by Seth Augenstein. The article talks about how a woman named Dominique Kendra Wix was arrested for the murder of her boyfriend. She claimed that he accidentally shot himself, but forensics investigators further learned through an autopsy that the angle of the ullet entry was not possible for an accidental self inflicted wound, and that she would have had to be the shooter. This article is interesting in allowing readers to understand some of the minute details taking into account in every case.
Michelle did a very good job writing this. She was very good at explaining the case so readers got a good grasp of the article. She also was very good with her pacing, making it easy to read and not lose interest. I also enjoyed how well executed her personal opinions were, making the article more personal.
Despite these positives there were some negatives. She could have added a bit more detail in general and made it longer, it would have made it a bit more interesting. Also, I felt like more quotes could be added to better my understanding.
One thing that blows my mind is how they are able to measure the angle of a bullet that is already inside someone’s body. This is very interesting and I learned a lot about an autopsy through this. Overall, really good job by Michelle.

Michelle Coppola’s review of “‘Accidental’ X-Mas Eve Shooting Ruled Homicide After Autopsy, Girlfriend Arrested” had three particularly strong aspects. Firstly, her summary explained all elements of the article that needed to be understood. She explained that the girlfriend’s original story was that the boyfriend accidently shot himself while pulling the gun, how the police could prove or disprove this story by looking at how the size of the bullet wound as well as the angle from which the bullet had to have been shot from would match or not match a self-inflicted wound. Secondly, the summary also used discretion on what should be included as to not just merely repeat the contents of the very short article. For example, Coppola does not mention the fact that the wounds created from the gases of the gun expanding at a close range that would indicate the wound was self-inflicted were also not present, and they would have to be present for Wix’s account to be true. This helped Coppola’s summary because she already made it clear that there were a number different techniques used by investigators to verify/disprove the story, so specifically describing one of them would have been too detailed when there were other important aspects of the case. Thirdly, she clearly stated what she thought was strong and weak about the article with proper transitions. For example, she used “I thought it would have been more helpful…” to clearly state what could be improved, or lack of explanation of the case, but used “however” to clearly distinguish that from her strong point, or the detailed explanation of how the gunshot wound was examined.
However, there are two ways in which Coppola’s article could be improved. The first is that rather than use clear transitions in her summary as to what was happening in the story, she merely inserted excerpts from the text that could have been stated herself. For example, rather than just simply state one portion of what police said about the wound in a quote, or that, “the angle at which the fatal single shot must have been fired – disproved the story of a self-inflicted wound,” she could have made it more clear about what she was trying to say police did by saying something instead to the degree of, “When forensic analysts examined a number of different characteristics of the bullet wound, such as the trajectory of the projectile, the location of the wound, and the presence of marks that normally show up on wounds from a close range; the present wound did not match any of the three characteristics when found on a self-inflicted wound.” Instead, by taking the quote approach, she leaves out the important techniques and needs two more sentences to even describe what the police were doing. A second aspect that could be improved about her review was that she did not explain any larger application of the contents of the article to society than what already was conveyed in the article. She merely states that there are “many of these types of shootings”, when she could have made her own stronger point. This lesson, in fact, was what surprised me the most about this article. I already knew that the procedures to analyze a bullet wound in this article are so common and basic that I could find them in a high school textbook. However, if I was a criminal, I would have had no idea just how competent police are in this area. This revelation teaches me that while it is a blessing how fast the field of forensics has expanded with increasing technologies, police still use old-fashioned deception just as one bluffs in a poker game, and this was just as effective since the criminal had no idea her story could be disproven so easily and told it.

Michelle’s review of “Accidental' X-Mas Eve Shooting Ruled Homicide After Autopsy, Girlfriend Arrested” was a very interesting review. First of all, it really helped that she had exact details of the crime scene, talking about the place where it occurred and even stating the mark of the gun, a 9mm handgun. In addition, the fact that she had a quote from the article incorporated in her review about the angle of the shot, gave me some additional information about it. Finally, Michelle did a really good job on going even further into the topic and talking about the different versions the girlfriend offered the police, showing how it was extremely different.
Although this review was very interesting, one way it could have been made better is that Michelle could have talked more about why this topic is important for society as I thought her first paragraph was very thorough but then she went a bit quick in the second paragraph. By reading it over and adding a few more details, she could have avoided this problem. Moreover, I would have added more information on the exact science between the angle shots and how the place of the shooter is determined as I do not have much knowledge about it. By adding one or two sentences about that topic she could have made her review even more thorough.
Overall, this review was captivating and thought-provoking. I had read an article that talked about this idea of looking at a gunshot and making sense of the events that took place from it, so I was intrigued when I read Michelle’s review. Thus, learning about this was very enlightening and taught me many new things. Reading this review made me realize that a dead body can tell many things and that sometimes it can solve a case.

Michelle did a nice job on her current event report on “‘Accidental’ X-Mas Eve Shooting Ruled Homicide After Autopsy, Girlfriend Arrested.” by Seth Augustein. Michelle’s summary was thorough and clear. Michelle’s review was easy to read and understand. Michelle articulated her opinion on the original article well, criticizing its lack of detail regarding specifics of the case. I agreed with Michelle’s opinion. Michelle had nice pacing, and kept me interested the entire length of her report.
Michelle’s quotes were weak because she could have easily paraphrased them. Michelle also did not connect this article to the real world, making her writing harder to relate to.
From this article I learned that modern police officers use the ballistic angle techniques to convict criminals. This technique seems simple enough, and is similar to the angle techniques we are studying in class to analyze blood stains. It is interesting to learn about how physics affects many facets of forensic science.

Michelle Coppola wrote a very nice review on the article “'Accidental' X-Mas Eve Shooting Ruled Homicide After Autopsy, Girlfriend Arrested,” written by Seth Augenstein. In this review, Michelle used many direct quotes from the author about this criminal case. This established the credibility of her review and provided a more clear reading for her readers. In addition, Michelle carefully listed all of the suspicious details about this case that helped the investigator to determine that this case was actually a murder instead of a suicide. Some of these evidences included the angle of the gunshot, the size of the wound, and the differences in the two stories Wix gave to the investigators. These details portrayed a clear image for the readers. Finally, Michelle had her own critical thoughts about the original article and said that it would be nice if the author gave “more information regarding the case as well as what other experts have said”. This showed that she put a lot of thoughts into this article.
Even though Michelle’s review was very well-written, there are two areas of possible improvements. First of all, she did not give any transitional sentences between paragraphs. If she added some transitions, the review would be more smooth to read. Also, it would be very nice if Michelle gave more details about the wound and how the investigators were able to use the evidence to prove that Wix was the murderer. Other than these, this review was very enjoyable.
This case surprised me because all of the details the investigators used as evidence to prove this case to be a murder are very small and hard to notice. The murderer was very smart in saying that this case was a suicide, but the investigators were still able to discover small but suspicious evidences to find out the truth. It also surprised me to find out how much information one can gain from autopsy.

Michelle wrote a very informative review of the article “Accidental' X-Mas Eve Shooting Ruled Homicide After Autopsy, Girlfriend Arrested.” In which an incident is described where Dominique Kendra Wix is arrested for the murder of her boyfriend. Wix claimed that the shooting was accidental, however, through forensic investigation, it was proved that her story was false. I think that Michelle did a very good job in summarizing the article so that the reader was given just enough information about this case. I also think that her addition of several quotes from the article further the reader’s understanding of this case. Finally, I think that Michelle’s critique of the article, stating that the author should have included the opinion of experts, was interesting and well thought out.
I think to improve her critique, Michelle could have included more information on how this case relates to what we have learned in class, so that the reader could relate it to their personal knowledge. I also think that Michelle could have included more detail as to how the police disproved Wix’s story.
Overall I think that Michelle wrote a very good review. It proved insight into the importance of forensic science by showing how it is instrumental in proving and disproving the guilt of a suspect.

Upon reading Michelle Coppola’s review regarding “Accidental' XMas Eve Shooting Ruled Homicide After Autopsy, Girlfriend Arrested” the overall impression that I took away from reading her review was that I was impressed with the work that Michelle put into her article. Therefore while I enjoyed many factors that were present within your review, three factors stood out to me which I really liked. The first thing I think you did an excellent job at Michelle is that you were able make your article interesting from the start by emphasizing the background to this horrible shooting. “Dominique Kendra Wix was charged with murder in the killing her boyfriend” (Michelle Coppola). By doing this Michelle you are able to make your reader want to read more because they have gotten a tease of information which makes them interested to finding out how this case was solved. A second factor which I also enjoyed about your work was that you had very good quote usage regarding how the murder played out. “The angle at which the fatal single shot must have been fired – disproved the story of a self-inflicted wound” (Seth Augenstein). By doing this Michelle successfully adds validity to her work and furthermore makes her article more fascinating. A third factor which I also enjoyed was Michelle’s sentence structure. Your sentence structure throughout your review was very strong and in result it proves to be effective because it helps make your article flow smoothly without any choppy points.
However, while I enjoyed many accounts that your article contained, I believe that improvement can always be used even for the elite ones. One factor which I think you can improve on is perhaps adding more depth to her article because by adding depth your argument has more validity. “The day following the autopsy, Wix was brought into the Kenner Police Department headquarters. When presented with the forensic reevaluation of the fatal shot, Wix allegedly changed her account of her boyfriend’s death” (Seth Augenstein). By adding more depth such as introducing in one or two more quotes, I believe your article has the potential to be even better because you argument would therefore have even more evidence to backup your claim. A second factor which I also think Michelle can improve on is perhaps her grammar use. While there were not that many miscues, there were minor mistakes such as misspelled words and run on sentences. I believe that this can be easily and could make your article better if you just read your work to make sure that every word that has been written in your current event makes sense.
Overall from reading both Michelle’s review and the article, the impression that I took away from your work was that I thought you did a very good job at exposing us to a new perspective in Forensics. I say this because your review gave me insight regarding the perpetrator as well as her attempt to cover up her involvement in her boyfriend’s death, which I find interesting. I chose this article because this came from a unique but verified source which I thought educated me more on what goes on in forensics. Overall this article has changed my perspective on police because in the news the media portrays them as corrupt, but in this article it is examined that the police when doing crime investigations must use every tool available to link the victim to perpetrator.

Michelle’s review of the article ““'Accidental' XMas Eve Shooting Ruled Homicide After Autopsy, Girlfriend Arrested.” was very well written and interesting to read. I liked how Michelle included many quotes from the article throughout her review to make it even stronger. I also liked how she criticized the article in her last paragraph and stated her true opinion on what would've made the article even better. Lastly i liked how she was very interested in the topic and showed that throughout the article by making sure her eview was straightforward and easy to follow.
Although Michelle’s review was pretty good, I think she could’ve done a better job if she made it a little more lengthier and went more in depth about the topic. I also had a hard time trying to read the whole review as it wasn’t fully visible on the homepage so i had to open it in another tab.
I honestly think it’s crazy how in the atcle they talk about measuring the angle of the bullet that was in the body, I thought that was a very interesting insight about autopsies.

Michelle’s review of her article was very well written. I appreciated how she included all relevant and important details of the case in her article. Michelle did a very nice job with her current event review on the article “'Accidental' X-Mas Eve Shooting Ruled Homicide After Autopsy, Girlfriend Arrested.” from the Forensic Magazine. I decided to review her report because the article title was rather intriguing. There are many good techniques she uses throughout her report. One example is how she discusses both the victim and the suspect from this specific case. Her focus on this factor of the original report is important as it provides readers with insight on the criminal investigation. Another aspect of Michelle’s writing that was done rather well was when she provided a direct quote from the original report. This quote was beneficial to her current event report because it offers the reader direct information surrounding the topic at hand. Lastly, I appreciated how Michelle discussed her own opinion concerning the criminal investigation of the claimed accidental Christmas Eve shooting.

Overall, Michelle’s report was extremely interesting and informative concerning the topic at hand. However, there are some details that she could tweak and add to make the current event report even that much better. I recommend that she explains how, exactly, this homicide affects the future of Forensic science. She does not go into much detail concerning the case’s specific impacts. Also, she could have discussed what are the likely subsequent steps in the criminal investigation of the supposed accidental shooting ruled homicide.

Michelle’s report was very informative and I learned extensively about the specific case of the Christmas Eve shooting. Before reading the report, I had little knowledge about this specific criminal investigation. The criminal investigators and forensic scientists tasked with this case worked diligently in order to bring justice and find the killer of Akoya Skeith.
