Where Are the Rape-Kit Nurses?

Where Are the Rape-Kit Nurses?

I decided to read, "Where Are The Rape-Kit Nurses", for my current event. In this article, it describes the lack nurses that are trained properly for taking rape kits in Las Vegas. The process of teaching the nurses and having them on-call is too expensive. Last year in Las Vegas 718 people had received sexual assault examinations, this means there were about 50-80 kits taken every month. Las Vegas has one of the highest sexual assault ratings because of the clubs and casinos that are running around the clock. They said, "the line between consent and assault are quickly blurred" in a casino. Last year from the 718 people who got the sexual assault examinations, 60 percent of them were residents. This also isn't counting the people who are too scared to come forward because they think that their insurance won't be able to cover it and they might not be able to get to a hospital that has trained nurses. Not only do people have trouble coming forward and getting an examination when they do come forward, their rape-kit might not ever get tested. In Nevada alone, there were 8,000 rape kits that were never tested that just sit in law enforcement storage rooms. Overall, there are so many rape cases that are going undetected because of the lack of training the nurses have and the availability in local hospitals.

This article is very significant to issues that are happening today. You hear stories of young girls at college who get taken advantage of because of "miscommunication" between them and another person. These girls who do get raped, are too scared to come forward because they're afraid of what people might think of them. If they do come forward, most colleges say that they should go to the campus security before they go to the police. When they go to the security, they usually try and tell the girls that they should take a day to think about what actually happened that night. This will make the girl think that they did something wrong and they'll get intimidated into not saying anything. This is a very prevalent topic today amongst women who are trying to advocate for the girls who are too afraid to say anything after their assault. Many times, if the girl does get a rape kit and they do find the person who assaulted the girl, the guy somehow gets the charges dropped or gets the charges cut. This is one of the biggest controversial topics between men and women.

While reading this article, I thought that the author did a great job explaining the troubles that women face while trying to get justice for themselves. One of the things I would have liked to have in the article was more information about different places in the United States, like New York, California and maybe some colleges, and how they deal with rape cases and what their system is for taking examinations. Also, I would have liked to see the different numbers of nurses in each state compared to each other to see how many of the nurses lack the training of taking these examinations. Overall, I thought that the article had a great explanation on why some girls don't come forward after their assault.

Haley, as I read your review of the article, "Where Are the Rape-Kit Nurses" I thought you did a good job overall. You explained the point the article was trying to get across very well. In your review, you were clear and concise and did not drift away from the main points of the article. As a reader your writing was clear, on point and easy to read. I understood your take on the article and your opinion. I liked how you brought outside information into your article and made a connection to other issues in society.. It helped the reader know that you really knew what you were talking about and emphasized the importance of the article.

One thing you could work on would to be to use bullet points. I think this would help emphasise the statistics you were stating. You also did a great job highlighting outside information but going back and relating your outside information directly to the article would be helpful.

From reading your article I am sad to learn that most women or men are going to have a difficult time in trying to get a rape kit with only one hospital providing them. These people are in a very vulnerable state of mind and not having easy access to care makes the experience even harder for them. This is something that needs to receive more attention because it is important for women and men to be able to come forward and get the medical attention they need.

I thought Hayley did a great job of explaining that the The lack of rape-kit nurses is a small part of a much larger problem. and that Over the past few years, many things involving women's health and women's health issues has been pushed aside. Inexplicably, women's reproductive rights and well-being has taken the back burner to other health issues. Many women's Fundamental care and access to gynecological services has been restricted and funding decreased The lack of rape-kit nurses is just a by-product of a larger issue; the larger issue being the attack on women's reproductive health and welfare. Although the author of the article detailed many valid, pertinent points, there is a lack of concrete solutions or ideas to help alleviate the crisis.

Haley Berry submitted a review of the New York Times news article, “Where Are the Rape- Kit Nurses?” Haley’s review was extremely detailed, she did not leave out any bit of key information that she found in the article. She also had a great number of facts and statistics integrated into her review, this helped to support the claims and show how relevant and common these cases are. A third thing I found successful about Haley’s review is her connection to today, I agree that the topic of rape is unfortunately becoming more common and more women are slowly building the confidence to speak up for themselves, so it is very important that our country is trained and ready to help the victims.
However, there were two things I might suggest for Haley to review. The sentence structure and flow was a bit choppy, when reading her review it felt like it was just a restatement of facts in bullet form. Maybe if she were to elaborate and describe more about the most detailed facts it would flow better, rather than briefly stating many facts. Also, it remained unclear as to where the concern of untrained nurses came about, or what it means to be trained to take a rape kit, or why nurses would lack the knowledge to complete a very common and important test. This is probably the most valuable information Haley needed to share, so if she were to go back and add more details on this subject rather than the other side details she included so much of.
I am familiar with Rape- Kits, but I was never aware there were nurses who specialized in their category. I also did not know anyone hesitated to get a rape kit done because of insurance or fear the nurses would not be trained to do it.

I thought Haley did an amazing job reviewing the article. She covered many aspects of it in great detail making it very easy to understand having not read it myself. The examples Haley choose to touch on were ones I had known about but not in the depth she had explained. I learned more about rape kits in her overview of the article than I had from hearing about them. This really caught my attention because I had never thought that rape kits were put aside to sit in storage lockers, and the women who needed the answers from them never received any word.
I think Haley could have gone in farther explanation about college rape, because I learned a lot about the Vegas scene and wanted to hear more about college campuses. I think she also could have tied the rape kits and nurses more into the college campus example to further unify the review.
I was very impressed by this article review and learned a lot about a topic I didn't even realize was this large of a crisis for women's health and safety.

Hayley, you did a great job at explaining how there are few trained nurses who are capable of taking rape kits in Las Vegas. You also supplied he reader with very informative details and specific statistics. Lastly, I felt that you did a great job at explaining why it is relevant in modern society, you wrote, "This article is very significant to issues that are happening today. You hear stories of young girls at college who get taken advantage of because of "miscommunication" between them and another person. These girls who do get raped, are too scared to come forward because they're afraid of what people might think of them."

I believe your review could have been significantly better if your writing flowed better. It was slightly choppy and it felt like you were just listing facts. However, that being said, it allowed me to remember and understand your review more clearly. Also, I would have like to see more quotes from the author. It validates your points and with ethos, it makes your review more credible.

I was very surprise that there were 718 sexual assault examinations in one year, this statistic seemed very high and I would not have expected it.

Hayley wrote an insightful review of the article “Where Are the Rape-Kit Nurses,” by Brittany Bronson. She was able to perfectly summarize the ideas that this article put forth, by providing statistical data to support her ideas. For instance, she discusses how in 2016 alone, 718 people had received sexual assault examinations in Las Vegas. By including this evidence, the readers are able to make sense of the specific ideas she started earlier in her review. Also, I was impressed that Hayley incorporated quotes from the article to support her claims. For example, she states “the line between consent and assault are quickly blurred,” as she quotes the article, when talking about the casinos in Las Vegas. Lastly, Hayley’s explanation of why this article is significant to issues happening today, is very well written. She brought up a good point, when talking about rape cases that are common in college; most girls who get raped are too afraid to come forward, due to what they think others may believe.
Although this report is really well written, there are a few things that could be done to make it even better. A couple of quotes from the article were incorporated into this review, however, people who read this review will not know who said these statements. This is because Hayley wrote “they said,” when explaining who said the phrase from the article. Because of this, I suggest that she include the name of the person that said the line, rather than simply saying “they said.” One other thing that could help improve this review would be to also discuss what the plans for the future are. The article states, that just recently, Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval signed a bill, that will require state law enforcement agencies to decrease the time between the initial sexual assault exam and the DNA analysis. By incorporating this information into the review, it will educate the readers on what has been done, so far, to minimize this problem.
I truly enjoyed reading this review that Hayley developed after reading “Where Are the Rape-Kit Nurses?” I think this review is very informative, and enables the reader to gain a better understanding of this topic. I addition, I learned that many cases are often linked to particular cities, such as the high number of sexual assaults in Las Vegas, alone. I chose this review to learn more about the problems surrounding the issue of sexual assault in general, and the difficulties that law enforcement faces every day in dealing with rape kit evidence. Overall, Hayley’s review is very good and shows a great understanding of this article.

Hayley wrote a very well written review of the article "Where Are the Rape-Kit Nurses" by Brittany Bronson. Hayley did a wonderful job explaining the statistics of last year she really went into detail on how many people were raped last year in Nevada and how many of those people who were probably so scared to come forth and say that they were raped but did only for their rape kit to not even be processed or be done correctly. I thought another well executed part of Hayley's review was when she started to go into the problems women face when trying to achieve justice for themselves. Not only do women's rape-kit's sometimes not get done properly or processed, they go through the struggle of family members, friends or even the police telling them that maybe they have the story wrong and should re-think filing charges this is a real problem today and I'm glad it was mentioned in this review. I felt one of the strongest point's in Hayley's review was when she added in the quote that show's how the line between consent and force are often blurred in a casino which is the reason for why there are so many rape victims in Las Vegas.
This review was well written but there are some things that could have made it even better such as adding more quotes in. When Hayley added in that quote that spoke about the line being blurred between consent and assault I thought it was extremely powerful and key to her review and wish she would've added more like it. I loved when statistics of last year were added into the beginning of this review I thought it made it all that much better but we only got statistics of last year, I think it would've been really interesting and possibly could've further improved this review by giving us the statistics of how many people get raped on average in Las Vegas and how many of those people on average don't get justice.
What I truly learned from reading Hayley's review was that casino's whether it be in Las Vegas or somewhere else are a very dangerous place to be at especially for women who aren't in their right state of mind from drinking or just women in general because they do risk a higher chance of getting raped, casino's are dangerous regardless and people, both men and women should be aware of their surroundings and be safe.

I thought that Haley did her research very well and presented a great analysis of this article. She spoke well about the lack of care that goes into the rape victims and the kits. She states “In Nevada alone, there were 8,000 rape kits that were never tested that just sit in law enforcement storage rooms”. She shows that there are so many rape kits that never even get to the second stage of being tested. This has been pushed off for years doctors need to get these rape kits tested to move on with these cases. She did a great job but one thing that could have made it better would have been talking more in depth about the college cases and how many women are too scared to come forward. I overall was surprised on how many cases of rape are left open, and was shocked by the numbers.

Hayley, I think you did a great job summarizing the article. The statistics that you provided about the small percentage of rape kits that are actually tested out of all of the rape kits that are taken and received. This was a very interesting topic to pick and you were very articulate in shedding light on the issue which I knew nothing about. You also went into detail about how the way rape kits are handled directly affect the amount of assaulted girls who actually come forward to get tested and report assault, which is a very relevant issue when discussing rape kits. I think something you could have expanded on was more on why the nurses aren't trained. Your summary also made me wonder why there weren't any laws or regulations that required untested rape kits to be tested. If there wasn’t anything about that in the article, it may have been worth mentioning if you yourself had thought of it. I was very interested in reading your review about rape kit nurses because I think the topic of rape kit testing is particularly interesting. I was especially interested to learn that one of the reasons the kits aren't tested is because there just aren't that many people trained properly to test them, I think we can both agree this is a major issue and that the government should pursue ways to train more nurses which would result in testing moe rape kits.

I thought Hayley did a great job at explaining how there are almost no nurses that are around to examine rape victims because it is to expensive for them to be on call all the time. I thought the way that you were able to present the facts and stats to the reader was great. Your writing flowed well and it helped the reader understand what the stats were in relation to and how they connected to the rest of the article. I thought that you were able to keep the reader engaged by bringing up new facts throughout. I thought that you really helped a reader understand how it was relevant to themselves. I thought you displayed facts that showed that it's possible that a person the reader knows is possibly a victim and that really makes you stand back and take a look at yourself.
I thought that you could have added some more quotes. I think you did a great job incorporating them into the review when you did but I feel like there could have been some more. I also think that you could have led into your paragraphs a bit better instead of just jumping in with a fact maybe lead with a hook sentence.
I found it very interesting that in Nevada alone there were 8,000 rape kits that have never been tested and just sit in Storage facilities.

Hayley Berry’s review on the article, “Where are the Rape-Kit Nurses?”, was very well written. Hayley gave a good background and analysis to what the article was about. By doing this, it makes it easier for the reader to understand the meanings to the article. I also thought it was interesting how she included the amount of sexual examinations to amount of kits per month. This information is good to include in a review because it brings in important and current facts from the article. Lastly, I thought that Hayley’s written opinion of the article was also very well written.
There was not much to Hayley’s review that I would change. However, I think if she included more quotes then it would have brought in even more facts from the article, making the issue easier to understand to the readers. I would also like to have seen more information about how these hospitals plan to take action in the future.
I think that this review was very informative and very well written. One thing that stood out to me the most during this review was reading how many rape examinations had occurred in a year. It was absolutely mind blowing to read that number, 718.

My classmate Hayley wrote a very interesting review on the article “Where Are the Rape-Kit Nurses?” The article highlights the lack of rape kit nurses readily available in Las Vegas. Hayley does a really good job articulating the many reasons why it is hard to train and hire these nurses. Secondly, I really liked how she interjected and put her thoughts into the article. This allowed the reader to understand the moral dilemma of this city’s problem. Finally, I liked how Hayley put everything into perspective by showing the amount of sexual assaults per month and per year. This really opens the reader's eyes to how serious this issue is.
Although Hayley wrote a flawless review, there was some steps she could've done to
improve the reader's understanding of the article. I really liked how she said gave statistics per month and year for las vegas, but when talking about universities she doesn't give an exact number for women affected by this issue in university. Lastly, I feel that Hayley could have given better background information to help the reader contextualise. However, the article was still written amazingly.
Reading this article helped me understand how the big rape issue in this country is. By reading this, it helped me understand how law enforcement deals with issues like this. I thought it was very shocking that over 7,000 rape kits in Nevada go untested every year. This is a huge injustice to the women on America who will never get justice for the crime that was done to them.

I thought Hayley wrote an excellent summary on the article "Where Are The Rape Kit Nurses? I enjoyed reading Hayleys summary because she did a great job of taking the facts from within the article and using them to prove the seriousness of her current event. I also enjoyed how she compared the article to what was happening today. This kept my interest while I was reading her review because she was able to connect her current event to problems with a similar issue in colleges. The final thing I believed she analyzed the article very well this made it easy for me to understand what her main points were.
I believe that Hayley did a very good job but there were room for some improvements. i think Hayley could have got more quotes from the article "Where are the Rape Kit Nurses" i believe if she used more quotes she could've went into further detail about what the author was trying to prove even though she already did a good job with that. she also could have explained the plan for the future to stop this from happening. Reading waylays review made me a realize how serious a problem was that i didn't even know was going on before i was able to read her review. overall i think she did a wonderful job with her informative summary of the article.

I really enjoyed this article as well as the comment Hayley wrote. She really did a great job of doing the analyzation and took the fact from the article itself. She also uses her own argument to prove the seriousness of the current event. I love when she compared the current event to what is happening nowadays which is really concerning. I believed that she analyze the article pretty well and she did a great job of that.
I think she can have more personal details about the author, that will be great. On the other hand, she can come up with an idea to maybe stop this situation for the future.
I really enjoyed this article and the review Hayley gave.
