Michigan State Police have released information about 23 year old human remains, asking help from the public to identify the individual. In October, 1994 a hunter was walking in a wooded area in Alcona County when he came across the remains of an identifiable individual. Anthropologists at Michigan State University are assisting in the investigation to identify the female remains. They are said to be from a 30-50 year old female between 4’7” and 5’6” tall, most likely European/ Caucasian. The skull was found fractured from trauma around the time of death, which was 4 years before the time they were found. DNA samples were collected and posted to the CODIS and National Missing and Unidentified Persons System databases. However, this was not enough to identify the remains. Forensics Artists then became involved to help involve the public, they developed 3 possible sketches of the individuals face following these techniques. Three techniques were used, the first image was a two dimensional sketch drawn in graphite based on anthropological landmarks on the skull which indicated feature shapes. The second image was created through digital rendering aided by a 3D scan of the skull. And the third image was a 3D clay model of the skull, which FBI forensic artists created following a two dimensional approach.
Everyday a new case is released involving a missing or unidentified person. For most people like myself, I think of DNA matching like fingerprints to find a match to the remains. Not many people think about the involvement of the arts in forensic studies, but digital art and graphic work can be essential in identifying victims and suspects involved in a criminal case. New 3D and digital technology has developed incredibly the past few years, that I believe it’s on it’s way to becoming one of the most common factors in identifying individuals.

This article was very interesting to read, mostly because art and forensics are both classes I take this year and am fascinated by, so to see them tie together was very interesting. The article presented a good summary of information on how this method applied to this specific case and how they were developed. However, I felt the article lacked a lot of points that could add to it, such as the previous history of this forensic artistry and how this will impact us in the future. I would suggest readers to also research this in other articles because it’s worthwhile, however it would be easier had these authors of this article provided this assortment of information themselves.

While reading the review that Maggie posted about the article “Tips Sought to Help Identify Human Remains Found in 1994; Artistic Renderings Released”, I thought that Maggie did a great job in putting the pieces of information in a chronological order. The grouping of the information was not at all confusing to read. I also thought that she did a great job of pulling evidence from the article into the summary. This gave a lot of contexts that really helped me understand the article much more. Another aspect that I thought she did great with was putting her own view and incorporating it into the summary but not too harshly. Maggie did a great job of summarizing that article and really helped me understand the topic more than I did before.
Although that review was overall great, there was a little repetition while talking about it during the summary. I thought that she could have really defined her points that she was making so that the summary could have flowed better. Also, another thing that I thought she could have done better on was the connection to the world could have been better. It was very self-opinionated and personally, I thought it could have been broader so others could connect to it.
One thing that I learned from this well-written review was that the FBI can use 3D printing to help further their investigations. I thought that this was very interesting because, with the technology that we have today, we can really advance in science and create new ways of thinking.

I read Maggie’s summary and review of the article “Tips Sought to Help Identify Human Remains Found in 1994; Artistic Renderings Released” from Forensic Magazine. I thought Maggie did an impeccable job summarizing important details and information in the summary and transitioning into her own opinions about the information she learned. I thought that this transition brought a lot to the review and helped bring another perspective to the new technology. I also really liked that Maggie incorporated her own studies of forensics and art in the review, and how that inspired her and intrigued her to pick this article to read.
To improve her review Maggie could have incorporated some direct quotes from the article. This would have brought more of the article into the review, aside from Maggie’s summary. I also think she could have included an expert's opinion on forensic artists techniques in identifying bodies in contrast to fingerprint DNA testing and more common methods the public is aware and familiar with.
Like Maggie I am also taking forensics and art classes this year and am thoroughly interested in both subject matters. I really enjoyed reading her summary because it was very interesting to see how even the arts are being brought into fields such as science that you wouldn’t normally think of together.

After reading the review written by my classmate Maggie, it was clear to see the immense detail she put into her work. She managed to piece together all the information from the texts in a way that made it clear and simple to read, this made me get a better grasp of the article. Along with putting well thought out information from the article, she also put in her own personal views into her summary, giving her work a more personal touch, which made it more interesting to read, rather than the regular everyday boring description. All in all it made me understand the topic much more than i did before.
However, even though she did a good job, she tended to reuse information throughout, which made it lose its impact a little bit. If she had use different data and mixed it up, it would have made each piece of information an important key in the analysis. Also it would have been great if she had added outside information to it, this would have made it really come alive and would have given the reader a better understanding and desire to learn more.
What i learned from this analysis was that 3D printing is now a key part during the FBI investigations. This was eye opening as to the new type of technology available today and how it can greatly affect the outcomes of crime scene investigations.

Maggie’s review of the article “Tips Sought to Help Identify Human Remains Found in 1994; Artistic Renderings Released,” from Forensic Magazine was very well written. Thought that she did a good job in providing a good summary of the article to give us a better understanding of the topic. I also thought that she did a good job in pointing out the importance of utilizing graphics and technology in determining what the victim looked like based on their remains. I thought Maggie also did a good job in connecting the contents of the article to society and life today.
Although Maggie’s review was overall well done, I thought that there were a few things which could have been added. I thought that she should have included quotes from the article, incorporating information from experts to help readers better understand the article. I also thought that she should have gone into more detail regarding the CODIS as well as the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System databases, describing what they are used for.
Overall, I thought that Maggie’s review of the article “Tips Sought to Help Identify Human Remains Found in 1994; Artistic Renderings Released,” was interesting to read and equally informative as well. From reading her review of the article, I learned more about how art is used by forensic scientists in the reconstruction of a person from their remains.

Maggie’s review of her article was very well done. I appreciated how she included specific details from her article to help articulate the points of the article. I appreciated her personal connection to the article as it made me feel connected to what was happening, and I agree that 3D technology is becoming more and more useful. I also appreciated how Maggie analyzed her article. I would be interested to hear about forensic artistry’s history and its potential impact.
There were two points in which Maggie could improve in. First it would’ve been nice to see some quotes in the article to gain first hand knowledge on the topic. I also felt as if she was repetitive with her arguments which made it a little weaker when following.
Overall Maggie did a great job with her review and I was surprised to know that 3D technology and the arts can be such a useful source in forensics.

In Maggie’s current event, “Tips Sought to Help Identify Human Remains Found in 1994; Artistic Renderings Released,” her ability to reiterate the article, her use of grammar, and her organization of the facts. Maggie did a great job summarizing the story and providing lots of background details on utilizing graphics and technology. She also supplied the reader with very informative details and specific statistics. Lastly, I felt that you did a great job at explaining why it is relevant in modern society by explaining what forensic scientists could do wrong.

I believe your review could have been significantly better if your writing flowed better. It was slightly choppy and it felt like you were just listing facts. However, that being said, it allowed me to remember and understand your review more clearly. Also, I would have like to see more quotes from the author. It validates your points and with ethos, it makes your review more credible.

Overall I thought though Maggie did a great job with the article and this was a very interesting read. I also thought it was very interesting that she chose an article with regards to a topic that she is very interested in, art, and because of this, I was able to learn that 3D technology and the arts can be such a useful source in forensics.
