Ohio Man Charged With Providing Guns that Killed Officers

Ohio Man Charged With Providing Guns that Killed Officers
Two officers were shot and killed this Saturday when responding to a domestic violence 9-1-1 call near Columbus, Ohio. When arriving on the scene, officers Eric Joering and Anthony Morelli were met with gunfire from Quentin Lamar Smith who was wounded by the officers who returned fire. This is the latest in a string of police ambush shooting. When investigators came to the scene they found the gun. “Community tips, social media posts and a gun trace led authorities to Lawson”, said Ronald Herndon, an agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, Tobacco, and Explosives. Gun tracing is a technique done by the Bureau of AFTE along with forensic investigators. It is done by tracking of the movement of recovered firearms from where the gun was sold to the manufacturer, the retailer and finally the person who purchased it. Quentin Smith gave his friend, Gerald Lawson, one hundred dollars to buy the gun. Smith himself could not buy a firearm because he was convicted felon. Lawson appeared in court for a federal hearing on the 12th. A bond hearing was set for Wednesday.
Gun trafficking is a serious issue in America. Domestic abusers and felons are not allowed to buy weapons, but due to weak gun laws in America, they can easily work around it. In gun-related homicides, only 1% of gun dealers were accounted for when almost 60% of crime guns were recovered by police and attempted to be traced. This is a disappointment, not only to officers Eric Joering and Anthony Morelli but all of the law enforcement officers in America whose job it is to protect us.
Overall, Andrew Welsh-Huggins did a good job on writing on this case. However, it was a very short article. Only very basic facts were presented and I had to do further research on the background information. I also had to look up how the Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, Tobacco, and Explosives trace guns. I would suggest including more information regarding the background of the crime, and how the Bureau of AFTE was able to trace the gun.

Ryan Staunton posted a very well-written review of, “Ohio Man Charged with Providing Gun That Killed Officers” by Andrew Welsh-Huggins of Associated Press. One aspect of Staunton’s review that was well-written was that he did background research on the relevant aspects of this case to forensics, and was able to provide a detailed description of how gun tracing works despite this not being mentioned in the article. Not only did Staunton tie the issue back to forensics, but he did not include too many irrelevant details that would stray away from the main points of the article: he only included the actual details of the crime and didn’t go into issues that didn’t matter like the relationships between Smith and his wife as well as the fact that Smith and Gerald Lawson, the man who bought the gun, were longtime friends. A third well written aspect of Staunton’s review was that he included a valid criticism of the article that was backed up by evidence: the most relevant part of the article, how the gun was traced to Lawson if he didn’t use it, would have been what tied the article to forensics and yet this wasn’t even included. Staunton was right in saying that the facts were very basic reporting and had little analysis or nuance to them.
One aspect that could be improved about Staunton’s review was that his “big issue” paragraph just restated the theme of the article, or how easy it is to bypass gun laws just by having a friend that was not in the system buy the gun for you. Staunton could have described another issue that the article posed, which is that when people file for bankruptcy there aren’t background checks done on those people. This is a very controversial issue because even though it is more likely for people who are bankrupt and have had a history of domestic problems to become criminals, is it wrong to go off the assumption that people who are bankrupt are more likely to become criminals, or is it alright to send that message to alert police to the possibility of later crimes and the danger of the suspect so that they would be more prepared for retaliation? Even though his review was concise, this was an issue Staunton could have pointed out. Secondly, when he talked about what the article did well, he just said the author did a “good job” without saying what was good about the article and citing specific evidence. Knowing what the article did well would give a more balanced review of it.
An epiphany I had about this article is that maybe there is more merit to strict gun control policies than I originally thought. I had simply forgotten that even if people were required to take a course to buy a gun in the same way that sixteen year olds need to get a permit and practice for a road test before getting their licenses, those people may just not be in the system themselves and buy guns for those who are. This makes me wonder if there really is no solution to the gun control debate because allowing guns can easily cause incidents like this, but controlling/banning guns just creates demand for them in the black market, which is just as bad.

The summary I read by Zack is truly a sad article that has to do with providing guns to harmful people. The story begins with a Ohio Man Charged With Providing Guns that Killed Officers Two officers were shot and killed this Saturday when responding to a domestic violence 9-1-1 call near Columbus, Ohio. Zack then goes on to talk about the arriving officers on the scene, Eric Joering and Anthony Morelli were met with gunfire from Quentin Lamar Smith who was wounded by the officers who returned fire. This is the latest in a string of police ambush shooting. These shooting are unexpected and lethal and need to come to a stop now. Too many lives are lost due to these slaughterings.

We as a nation need to put an end to gun violence in our country. People die everyday due to these weapons. It is very close to me as a student so that I can go to school safely everyday. The luxury that some schools do not have. I feel bad personally for those students because it must be hard not knowing what is going to happen in your school everyday. The recent shooting in Florida is enough to show that these weapons need to stop being administered. It is not fair to the students and teachers.

I would say that this is a great article about a very heart wrenching issue. It is hard to explain how these guns get administered and given out but this article does a great job of doing that exactly. I think this article and ones like these should be more headline news if it is not already. It need to come to a stop and our nation need to come together and realize that. I hope I begin to see more articles like these. A great summary by Zack as well.

Current Event 18- Commenting on Ryan’s Review
Due March 1st 2018
Welsh-Huggins, Andrew. “Ohio Man Charged with Providing Gun That Killed Officers.” Forensic Magazine, Associated Press, 13 Feb. 2018, www.forensicmag.com/news/2018/02/ohio-man-charged-providing-gun-killed-officers.
The first thing that I enjoyed about Staunton’s review was that it was that he included numerous amounts regarding depth in his topic which is very impressive. This is important because you are able to tie in the relevance that forensics has with gun shootings in the USA. Ryan proves to pull this out greatly since he was able to connect his article back to forensics and to the real world -such as Parkland and Sandy Hook as prime examples. A second factor which I also enjoyed reading in your review was that while you balanced your topic out, you also used great grammar strutucre and imgagery details which helps make the point to your review that the keys details for this crime. This is important because it shows your ability to be a very good ruthless writer who is not afraid to cut anything out- even if it is revelent to your topic. The third factor that I also liked about your review Ryan was that you used very good sentence structure to make transitions and keeping your article smooth. In result you are able to use great grammar to help emphasize the connection that this article has on the reader since if Ryan is able to continue this pace great things are to come.
However while there many things that I enjoyed about your review, I do believe there are two areas where you could improve on. The first is to try focusing more about the crime and keeping your reader clear on what your main theme is. I thought you could have done a better job on this because though your article is very compelling there were points were political bias is mentioned and instead mention the fact that we can now use GSR to track a killer. I believe you can improve this in the future by only using political bias as a sub point to help spark your review’s main theme. Another factor which I also believe you can improve the next time you post something is to try to find closure to your topic as a whole. I believe this the only other minor flaw you have because while your article is very good it also becomes a little repetitive at the end. One way I believe Ryan can fix this within the future is by highlighting his personal opinion on whether or not if it is appropriate for the Ohio Gunman to be held accountable for selling these weapons to other gun buyers who some while may be good, they also might be mentally unfit to have a gun because they might become a danger to everyone.
I thought Ryan did a very good job about his article regarding the Ohio Gunman. I found reading Ryan’s article to be very interesting because Ryan makes me remember that because we forget and put guns aside we forget the psychological effects that has taken on people who own guns. I believe this article speaks to me personally because I believe we need gun control because the fact that a mentally ill person is able to buy a gun and do things with it that are against our society is pure evil. Therefore this article convinces me that we need to change the gun purchasing age to 21 because for the US to become safe we must have gun regulation. Thus I chose Ryan’s article because I thought it would be proper for me to see the perspectives about this complex issue surrounding guns because if we are ever going to fix this we need to have stricter laws put in place such as putting through gun control regulations.

Ryan, I read your review of “Ohio Man Charged with Providing Gun That Killed Officers” by Andrew Welsh-Huggins and I thought that you did a good job. I thought that you did a nice job with your summary of the article. I was not confused about your topic. This is good for the readers since it creates a understanding of the subject matter for your review. Also, I like that your summary is brief. It does not bore the reader with useless information and you are able to move to the main point of your review faster. Finally, I like the way you connect the contents of the article to what we are doing in class as we do not go over the weapons used in crimes very often.

Although your article was good, there are some things that you could improve on. First, I would want more quotes directly from law enforcement on the issue if it would be possible. It would be useful in understanding the article. Also, I believe that you could polish the wording of the article a bit as it would be convenient to the reader.

Overall, I enjoyed your review. I am intrigued by this finding because we don’t talk about the murder weapon often in class.

Ryan did a good job on his current events report. He provided lots of details in his summary of the article, and created a deep understanding of the topic. Ryan also connected this sale of guns in Ohio to the school shootings in Sandy Hook and Florida. His connections made the article more relevant. Lastly, Ryan used clear sentence structure and correct grammar making his report easy to read and understand.
Ryan could improve his review by tightening his writing and being less repetitive. Also, while it is important to include opinions in reviews I believe Ryan’s political point of view should have been downplayed to the events that the article talked about.
From Ryan’s review, I learned about legislation regarding illegal gun sales. I had not considered that illegal gun sales were such a big problem in the US.

Ryan Staunton’s review on the article “Ohio Man Charged with Providing Gun That Killed Officers” by Andrew Welsh-Huggins of Associated Press is very interesting to read. Ryan did a great job summarizing the story and providing lots of background details on utilizing graphics and technology. He also supplied the reader with very informative details and specific statistics. Lastly, I felt that you did a great job at explaining why it is relevant in modern society by explaining what forensic scientists could do wrong.

I believe your review could have been significantly better if your writing flowed better. It was slightly choppy and it felt like you were just listing facts. However, that being said, it allowed me to remember and understand your review more clearly. Also, I would have like to see more quotes from the author. It validates your points and with ethos, it makes your review more credible.

Overall I thought that Ryan did a great job with the article and this was a very interesting read. I am intrigued by this finding because we don’t talk about the murder weapon often in class.
