I read the article “They Died by the Border. Art Students Hope to Bring Them Back,” from the New York Times this week. The remains of eight migrants crossing into the United States from Mexico were found last summer in the Arizona desserts. The bodies were identified and scattered by scavenging vouchers and other predators. Students at the New York Academy of Art are working alongside forensic artist Joe Mullins to reconstruct the faces of these missing individuals for families to claim and identify. Forensic Anthropologist Bruce Anderson, explained to New York Times reporters the importance of forensic artist work in identifying missing people in the reconstruction of an individual’s face based on characteristics of the skull. “To a trained eye, the complex structure of the human skull offers a blueprint to the facial features of the deceased. “A skull is the foundation an individual’s face is built on,” said Mr. Mullins, 47. “It’s like a house for your face.” The class than begins identifying specific characteristics of each skull differentiating one from the other; including scars, tissue depth, nose arch, chin, and earlobes. These are what build the foundation of the multiple layers of clay that are cut to create the unique faces of these unidentified migrants. By rebuilding an individual face scientific accuracy in understanding the built of muscle and soft tissue require many different layers of clay to create the perfected shape. The balance between scientific accuracy and artistic skill continues to remain debated in the forensic world but their results are unlike any others. These students give unidentified remains to have their stories told and not be a lost identity.
I chose this article based on its influence of art in the forensic field. It is something that really interests me given my involvements in fine arts as well as interest in learning about forensic science. I thought that this article was extremely well written and shed much needed light on a situation that is silenced in our country. Since 2001 nearly 2,800 migrant remains have been discovered in the Pilma County of Arizona and nearly 1,000 individuals are still left unidentified. It is a chilling story to hear the tales of those who do survive the dessert crossing and it is an issue that still occurs today despite government efforts to close the Mexican American borders. I wish that the article had included a story about one of these border crossing stories, however the included stories about remains found not in the dessert but a few miles from their work space in Queens, NY. The article could easily have included a story of a survivor however it was not the point of the article to tell the stories, but to tell the story of how students are restoring their identities.

After reviewing and reading the article I learned a lot, not only about forensic work but also different fields of art work. I am always interested in learning something new about how art can impact and help society and this was just another article enlightening me on the importance art truly plays in people’s lives. I would strongly recommend for someone to read this article and further research arts impact in fields or studies that interest oneself.

Lucy’s review of the article,“They Died by the Border. Art Students Hope to Bring Them Back,” by Patricia Brown was very well written. I thought that she provided a detailed summary of the article, providing a better understanding of the case. I also found it interesting how she described the process the art students went through to produce a representation of the person from their remains. I also liked how she was able to connect the case to modern day issues.

Although, her review of the article was overall well written, I felt that there could have been a few improvements. It would have been helpful to provide more quotes on the situation from other forensic experts. Also, I thought that it may have been helpful if she had elaborated more upon the impact art has on forensics and identifying remains of an unknown individual.

Overall I found Lucy’s review of the article,“They Died by the Border. Art Students Hope to Bring Them Back,” by Patricia Brown to be equally interesting as it was informative. I was able to learn more about how art is used in forensics when identifying an unknown individual.

Lucy’s review of “They Died by the Border. Art Students Hope to Bring Them Back” was a very interesting review. First of all, it really helped that she stated the name of the forensic artist, Joe Mullin, and what he does for a living, telling us a bit about where he works and what it consists of. In addition, the fact that she had a quote from the article incorporated in her review gave me some additional information about the topic. Finally, Lucy did a really good job on going even further into the topic and talking about why this topic is important for our society, giving statistics about the 2,800 migrant remains that have been discovered in the Pilma County of Arizona.
Although this review was very interesting, one way it could have been made better is that Lucy could have gone back through the review and taken out a few sentences that did not add much more information than she had already given. By reading it over, she could have avoided this problem and made her review more coherent. Moreover, I would have added more information on how to become a forensic artist if there was that information in the article, as it would have been very interesting. By adding one or two sentences about that topic she could have made her review even more thorough.
Overall, this review was captivating and thought-provoking. I had never heard about this profession of forensic artist, so I was intrigued when I read Lucy’s review. Thus, learning about this was very enlightening and taught me many new things. Reading this review made me realize that there are many forensic techniques that I do not know about but are extremely useful.

The article that Lucy reviewed Lucy’s review of the article,“They Died by the Border. Art Students Hope to Bring Them Back,” by Patricia Brown was a very well written She gave a summary of the article, going over most of the key details you need to know. When lucy was giving the summary I found it interesting that the art students had to recreate remains. The other thing she did great is bringing it to the real world. She brought up how this affects us now.

Again, Lucy did a great job but if i had to give her any suggests its. First, adding more quotes gives you’re statement more value and gives the reader a better understanding.

Lucy’s review taught me a lot of new things, I did not know that art students were able to do this. Also, how this relates to our class really ties this all together.

Lucy wrote an excellent current event response to the article “They Died at the Border. Art Students Hope to Bring Them Back” by Patricia Leigh Brown. She began with a succinct and informative summary that provided the reader with all of the necessary information. I especially appreciated how she described the process used to create these facial reconstructions. Lucy did a great job incorporating a quote from an expert in the field because it provided depth to her report. I also loved how she connected this article to the fact that she is interested and involved in fine arts.
Although Lucy wrote a thorough and well-written current event report, there are two areas where she could improve. I was a little confused at her suggestion that the author should have included a border crossing story closer to New York because I don’t know how common that is and how relevant it would be to the article, so maybe she could clarify that point. I also think that she could have included some information on the place of facial reconstruction in forensics and how important they are.
After reading this response, I have now learned of a touching story of art students trying to give faces to unidentified refugees who perished in the desert in order to help find the identities of these people. Lucy’s review was interesting and informative. I thought she did an amazing job and I have learned a lot about how forensics and art can work together.

This week, Lucy reviewed the article,“They Died by the Border. Art Students Hope to Bring Them Back,”. She was detailed and covered every base in her article, which made it easy to comprehend. She also did a great job describing the process of the art students producing a representation of people based on remains.

Lucy's review could have been improved by relating the article more to forensics and describing hoe forensics tied in a bit more. . It’s also great when the reviews have quotes, so adding those would have improved it as well.

Lucy chose a very interesting article to review as it is different from a lot of other current events.I never would have thought that art could have any relation to forensics.

Lucy’s review of the article “They Died by the Border. Art Students Hope to Bring Them Back.” was very written and interesting to read. I liked how she started out her review by providing the reader with a summary of what the article which made things a lot clear. I also like how she made her review much stronger by providing many quotes from the article directly. Lastly, I liked how she was able to find a connection to modern day and our society.
Although Lucy’s review was great, I think she could’ve done a better job talking about how art has an impact on forensics. I also think it would've been more interesting if she related this topic a bit more to forensics.
I thought this review was very informative and i loved her article of choice since no one could really think art could be related to forensic science.

Lucy wrote a good review on the article “They Died at the Border. Art Students Hope to Bring Them Back” written by Patricia Leigh Brown. Lucy did a great job by providing a lot of important information from the article and added her own personal take on the information given. She did a great job with describing the process of facial reconstruction, it was interesting and informative.

However, there were some parts of her analysis that could have used improvement, is she added some more personal thoughts on her input on facial recognition and why it is important. This would have added a more personal view on the article and the analysis. Also if she quoted more from the article, it would have made her argument stronger.

After reading Lucy’s analysis, i found it interesting and inspiring to learn about art students and how they are attempting to help find the identities of refugees as well as to give faces to the unidentified refugees. The information given was not only interesting but inspiring to read, to learn about students getting involved in something like this is amazing to read about. The article perfectly summed up how forensics can be easily tied into something as simple as drawing.

Lucy’s review of the article,“They Died by the Border. Art Students Hope to Bring Them Back,” by Patricia Brown was very well written. She did a very good job of providing enough details in her summary so that we could understand the article. I also appreciated how she described the artistic process in making the reconstructions. I also appreciated that she included a quote in her article to help give us a direct point of view.
Even though Lucy’s review was well written, there were two areas in which she could improve. I wish she would have discussed the connection between art and forensics and how useful art can be. I also wish she would have included more information about how relevant this is and how it connects to society.
Over all, Lucy did an amazing job with her review and I was vergoeding to hear how students were using art to help with this critical problem that is affecting so many people.

From Lucy’s review of “They Died by the Border. Art Students Hope to Bring Them Back.”, I felt that I was able to learn many new things that she explained. Lucy incited many great details in her review. For example, Lucy did a good job explaining the background of the story and kept the timeline throughout the review very clear. This made it easy for readers to understand her review. Secondly, Lucy added quotes from the article which gives the reader another incite about what others thought about the case. For example, Lucy used the quote “To a trained eye, the complex structure of the human skull offers a blueprint to the facial features of the deceased. “A skull is the foundation an individual’s face is built on,” to help set up her own opinion. Also, I thought Lucy did a good job on adding her own thoughts and opinions into the review rather than just straight facts.

Although, Lucy could add a few more ideas to his review to make it perfect. First, I think that Lucy should add more about the forensics part of the crime. Along with this, there are parts where Lucy can make his point more clear and concise through the review.

Overall, I think Lucy did a good job summarizing the article and adding her own thoughts and opinions. I found this review interesting and informative because I have never heard of this case and I am happy Lucy brought up this article for her review.

Lucy did a great job on her review of “They Died by the Border. Art Students Hope to Bring Them Back” by Patricia Leigh Brown. Lucy included a good quote in her review, which made her report stronger. Lucy gave a detailed summary of the article which helped me understand it better. Lucy also did a great job describing the final reconstruction by the artists. This was a very interesting article.
Lucy could have improved her report by including more of her personal feelings in order to connect with the reader I also which Lucy made a broader connection to society from this article.
I learned a lot from this review. I learned how facial recognition, art and forensics are all connected.

Lucy Rizzo submitted an excellent review of the article; “They Died by the Border. Art Students Hope to Bring Them Back,” from the New York Times. The first thing I noticed that caught my attention about Lucy’s article is that she chose one that was posted just about a week ago. I think often students don’t know where to find an article and randomly pick one from months or a year ago that no one is interested in anymore, but Lucy’s is fresh, new, and exciting. Another thing I enjoyed about Lucy’s review was her sufficient use of quotes! She did a great job using text from the article to her advantage to help support the claim. A third thing I found beneficial in Lucy’s review was her explanation of why she chose this article, she opened up to share how this topic is something she is passionate and excited about; which rubs off on the reader.
If I had to suggest two ways for Lucy to improve on her review; one would be the tone of her writing. English teacher’s always push students away from using words like “I” or “me” because they don’t want it to sound like you just talking casually about your opinion. In the last two paragraphs these words are unavoidable because the rubric requires you to share your opinion and connect it to your life; however, in the first paragraph it could be edited out to sound slightly more formal. Second I think Lucy could have taken some of the thoughts she mentioned in paragraph two and pushed it down to paragraph three, because the last one was lacking a bit of information.
Overall, I very much enjoyed reading this article and Lucy’s review of it. I found it interesting the way the writer viewed the skull as a the foundation for someones face, really as a work of art; and this discovery is something I am interested to learn more about.

Lucy reviewed the article, “They Died by the border. Art Students Hope to Bring Them Back” She was very detailed in her summary which helped the reader understand the point of the article. She also did a great job giving her own take on the argument. She did a great job describing the way that the art students are using facial reconstruction.
Lucy’s review was great but there were somethings she could have done better. She could have tied it back to forensics a little bit better. She also could have used some quotes in the review as when they are used it would have helped to improve the article very much.
Overall Lucy’s review was a great read and I am very interested in learning more about what is going to happen with the facial reconstructions.
