Levenson, Michael. “'Pillowcase Rapist,' Who Terrorized Florida in the 1980s, Has Been Caught, Officials Say.” The New York Times, The New York Times, 23 Jan. 2020, www.nytimes.com/2020/01/23/us/pillowcase-rapist-robert-koehler.html.

My current event article, “‘Pillowcase Rapist,’ Who Terrorized Florida in the 1980s, Has Been Caught, Officials Say” by Michael Levenson fro the New York Times, tells the story of a sexual predator from the 1980s and how he was caught forty years later. The perpetrator would break into women’s homes in South Florida and sexually assault them throughout the 80s, eventually being dubbed the ‘Pillowcase Rapist’. 50 investigators were assigned to the case and over 1,000 leads were chased until the trail eventually went cold. Three decades later, a suspect had finally been arrested. 60-year-old Robert Eugene Koehler, a registered sex offender, had been linked to the case when his son was arrested for felony domestic violence and was forced to give a sample of his DNA. “That sample provided a close familial match with samples collected from the rapist in the 1980s” explained Katherine Fernandez Rundle, the Miami-Dade state attorney. Koehler’s house was searched by police and it was also discovered that he kept souvenirs from his victims. As of right now, he has been linked to more than two dozen sexual assault cases.
This current event article has a heavy relevance in today’s society because it showcases the strength of DNA evidence and how much stronger our justice system is becoming as a result. Koehler had most likely believed he had gotten away with numerous sexual assaults only to be tied to them through the DNA of his son. This advancement of the technology surrounding DNA evidence is solving cases both new and old.
Levenson’s article is very well-written, specifically the summary of the case. It does not drag on too long and summarizes these heinous crimes without getting too gory. I think the article would have been stronger had Levenson chosen to use more quotes, as it would have made the article seem well informed.

Eve Balsiero review of ‘Pillowcase Rapist details the story of a sexual predator from the 1980s and how he was caught forty years later. I chose to comment on this article because I was interested in the way that forensic science tied into this case.

This article could have been more descriptive when describing the case. In fact, there are not enough sentences explaining how it happened and why. So to improve on this article I would be more descriptive, and add more direct evidence from the case.

My impression and learning experience from this article is that forensic science is so important because in this case years later was changed. It is very important because of the DNA evidence. I chose this article because I thought that the case was very interesting. Overall this was a great review and I am happy I read this article.

The article that Eve chose for her current event was very interesting to read and I enjoyed reading her thoughts on it. She summarized the article very well, making sure whoever was reading understood every detail. Another thing she did very well was making sure to include specific facts from the case in her summary. One last thing she did well was to connect the topic of the article to forensic science.

Although Eve did a great job on her current event there were some things she could have done better. One thing that I would change would be to give her opinion on the article a little more at the end. She did give her opinion a little but she could have added more specific criticisms. Lastly, even though she included details from the article, she could have added more quotes to make her statements more factual.

I believe Eve picked a great article for the current event because I learned a lot about how DNA can help forensic scientist in the real world. She did a good job summarizing and stating her opinions on it and I really learned a lot.
