The New York TImes describes a horrendous story of Robert
Eugene Koehler, a 60 year old man who has been linked
to over two dozen sexual assaults since the 80’s. He targeted
South Florida, as he snuck into women's homes and attacked
them. He had a gresoume signature when it came to his attacks
which involved covering his victims faces with his hands or a
pillow. This gave him the name, “Pillowcase Rapist”. 50 investigators
were assigned to the case and after chasing over 1000 leads, he still couldn't
be captured. However, on   the thursday of january this year, he was finally
arrested as a sex offender. He was charged with, in accordance to the article,
“two counts of sexual attery with a deadly weapon stemming from a rape
of a 25 year old woman.” Investigators used DNA sample taken from Mr.
Koehler  and linked him to over 24 other sexual assaults from last year.
They also found a dungeon in under Mr. Koehler home and many feared
that, if not caught, he would have gone on with other plans far worse than
what has been seen from him so far.

This article has shown that advances in forensic science have been
extremely useful in important cases such as the one described above. More
specifically, advancements in DNA sampling to link suspects to perpetrators,
has become more efficient and reliable. Rape and sexual assult is something
that must be taken serously in this cultre and challenge the social norms/stereotypes.

This article gave insight into a very interesting story, however
there was one critique I can make. I feel that there was a
need for more outside information/sources to backup the story behind
Koehler sentencing and backstory. Apart from that, I thought the article
was very well written and the author did a great job of creating

 concise/easy to follow information.

Masha reviewed her article in an informative manner, stating relevant facts while covering the topic. Her review possessed minor details and some feedback to the claim that forensic science could be essential in rape/sexual assault cases. She did not overcompensate and include unnecessary information in the review. Masha also provides the reader with her own opinion on the case, building her credibility by addressing flaws she sees in the procedure.
Masha could improve her by implementing more valuable feedback on the author of the article. If she offered more information from another standpoint, the review would have given the reader a more neutral review. She could also benefit from adding more context, particularly on the way they used DNA sampling to determine the rapist.
I learned the ways forensic science and DNA evidence could be used in a rape/sexual assault case. I wonder if a lot of people question the validity of DNA evidence since it’s very easy to wrongly link people to a crime scene.

Masha’s review of her chosen article was very well-written and engaging to read. One thing that I appreciated was using a quote to enhance the summary, making the review as a whole seem more credible. I also thought that the balance between praise and criticism was good and that the criticism itself was fair. Lastly, I thought that the summary was both concise and detailed, making sure the reader knows exactly what the original article was talking about while simultaneously making it easy to understand.
While the piece as a whole was very well done, one thing that I would have liked to see more of are Masha’s personal thoughts on the case and the technology. The added insight could flesh out the middle paragraph more and add more of a personal tough. Additionally, there were some minor grammar errors that can be fixed with some proofreading.
It’s very reassuring to know that the field of forensic science has advanced enough to be able to use this kind of DNA technology to pinpoint the culprit of violent and disturbing crimes such as this one. Reading about this has also piqued my interest in the topic as a whole, and I’d like to look out for more breakthroughs of this nature in the future.

For current event 20, I read Masha’s review of “ “'Pillowcase Rapist,' Who Terrorized Florida in the 1980s, Has Been Caught, Officials Say”. There were numerous things that Masha did well in this review. First, she did a great job writing her summary. The summary of the article covered all important aspects of the case, but did not include unnecessary details or information. Another thing done well in the summary was her use of quotes. Masha had a great balance of quotes and her own words which made her review fluid and easy to understand. Lastly, Masha’s own thoughts on the content of the article was well thought out and insightful.
One thing Masha could have improved in this review was her criticism. I did not think it was as clear as it could be. Additionally, there were some spelling errors in the review that could be distracting to the reader.
Overall, Masha did a great job with her review and I learned a lot. It is interestign to consider the benefits of DNA technological advancements and their application in forensics as well as the ehtical issues that come hand in hand.

The review Masha Popovic performed on the article: "Pillowcase Rapist,' Who Terrorized Florida in the 1980s, Has Been Caught, Officials Say." was very interesting and informative. She discusses the horrendous story of Robert Eugene Koehler, a 60 year old man who has been linked to over two dozen sexual assaults since the 80’s. I like how she was straightforward with the information. When she stated how “He had a gresoume signature when it came to his attacks which involved covering his victims faces with his hands or a pillow.”, it was a good way to put the information because it was a bunch of information packed into one sentence. I also appreciate how she was able to captivate the reader by using captivating words at the beginning like horrendus, and sexual assault. She did a good job stating things in her article that could have been improved and fixed in the future.
One thing Masha could improve on is explaining how and why she chose the article. She did not provide any reasoning behind her decision to write about it. Masha’s analysis was also very short and didn't provide the detail she needed to do the article justice. She could provide a longer analysis that makes the reader feel she has read the full article and knows what it is about. She also did not state the importance of the article. To improve, Masha could spend more time talking about the details explained as well as making more connections as to why she chose the article and inserting the importance to deepen her analysis.
I chose this article because it was very interesting and I enjoy reading things like this. I also wanted to see Masha’s writing style as I have never looked at one of her reviews before. By reading this article I learned about a very intersting sexual assault case. It will change my perception because now I have another piece of knowledge that I can use.

Masha’s review of “‘Pillowcase Rapist,’ Who Terrorized Florida in the 1980s, Has Been Caught, Officials Say.” by Michael Levenson and published by The New York Times was well written and extremely informative. Masha did a good job of introducing this case and providing lots of relevant background information and context on the case that made it easier for the reader to understand. In addition, Masha did a good job of critiquing the article and the author and pointing out what the article was lacking that could have made it better. Lastly, Masha also did a good job of explaining how advancements in forensic science, specifically in DNA sampling, have come a long way and help a tremendous amount in cases like these.

While Masha did a good job of summarizing the article and the contents discussed there were a few things she could have done to make her review better. First, I think the review could benefit from more analysis and opinion on her part. She did a good job discussing what the article is about, providing lots of relevant background information, and what the case is. However, more of her own opinion, on this case specifically, could make her review better. In addition, there were a few minor spelling and grammatical errors in the review. None of the errors made it too hard to read and comprehend, however, in some places, it could slow down the reader and they stop to try and figure out what is trying to be said.

Overall, I found this article and review to be very engaging and informative. The big takeaway for me from this article and review was the importance of DNA sampling in solving cases, especially rape and sexual assault cases. I knew how big a role DNA played in investigations, but I didn’t know the extent to which it could help solve cases that are all connected to the same perpetrator.

Review: https://bhscsi.blogspot.com/2020/03/masha-popovic-forensics-d-odd-current.html

Masha wrote a great review of Michael Levenson’s New York Times article, “'Pillowcase Rapist,' Who Terrorized Florida in the 1980s, Has Been Caught, Officials Say.” In particular, there were three aspects of her piece that I thoroughly enjoyed. First, I quite liked Masha’s writing style. She was able to write in a sophisticated manner while still providing the relevant information. Second, I think Masha did a great job in her introduction. She supplied a very detailed account of Robert Eugene Koehler’s story while still maintaining my interest. Lastly, I enjoyed Masha’s use of various quotes and facts from the case. They served to legitimize her writing and make it feel more professional, which I appreciated.

However, there were two components of her piece that I believe Masha could improve. First, I think she could have spoken more to the relevance of this article. I believe that she could have written far more sentences regarding the immense value of current tools for DNA analysis. Second, I wish she had further developed her concluding paragraph. I just felt like there was more to say about the pitfalls of the NY Times piece.

I had not heard about Robert Eugene Koehler and his horrific history before reading Masha’s review, so I found the story to be quite interesting and gruesome. The case does stand as a testament to the enormous value of DNA analysis.
