Boston University School of Medicine. "Sample preparation in forensic toxicological analysis may have huge impacts." ScienceDaily. ScienceDaily, 8 July 2021. <www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2021/07/210708111505.htm>.

For this current event, I decided to do an interesting article about how Sample Preparation in Forensic Toxicology can lead to huge improvements in its field. Researchers at BUSM (Boston University School of Medicine) provided Science Daily with an overview of sample techniques and information on routine sample types which may be encountered in Forensic Toxicology cases. Forensic Toxicology spans over a wide variety of scenarios from drugs-induced/impacted cases to the use or presence of alcohol in Forensics. These samples provided by BUSM will be able to help Forensic Toxicologists be able to identify samples of drugs / foreign substances in cases.

In regards to the importances to not only Forensic Toxicology but the field of Forensic Science is the quicker lab testing time and response time. In a Forensic Case where certain pieces of evidence can decay and time is of the utmost importance, being able to identify which substances are in play in the context of a case is key. These samples will allow Forensic Toxicologists in the field to be able to identify, mark and counteract substances found at the scene of an incident.

In a brief overview, the article gave an insightful and descriptive look into the world of Forensic Toxicology. This article is an example that even in today’s world, Forensic Technicians are still finding new ways to diagnose and analyze all types of data at any scale. In the world of Forensic toxicology, the technicians will be able to compare sample substances to those found at the scene allowing them to quickly identify evidence on a massive scale and again, it’s a nod to the marvels in technological advancements made since Orfelia first ignited the world of Forensic Toxicology into reality.

Comment on Ty Chermsirivatana’s Current Event
Many aspects were done well in Ty Chermsirivatana’s current event. The first aspect done well was that he explained what his current event is going to be about: “Researchers at BUSM (Boston University School of Medicine) provided Science Daily with an overview of sample techniques and information on routine sample types which may be encountered in Forensic Toxicology cases.” After he wrote that his current event is research-based, he explains what forensic toxicology is about which helped the reader understand the rest of the article. The second aspect he did well was that he explained how these sample techniques the researchers found will help forensic toxicology cases by identifying “samples of drugs / foreign substances in cases.” It is great that he did this because now the readers are more interested in his current event than before because they know that there is a real-life application for the research. This makes the article more exciting. The third aspect done well was that he made the topic broader to all of forensics rather than just forensic toxicology because there will be a “quicker lab testing time and response time.” This is an aspect well done because it shows that the article he read is very important. It not only encompasses forensic toxicology but all of forensics. His article was a very interesting read.
While his current event was great, there were some improvements he could have made. The first aspect of improvement is that he could have explained why BUSM started researching this: “Researchers at BUSM (Boston University School of Medicine) provided Science Daily”. It would have been interesting to know if there was a case that led to this research. The second aspect of improvement was that when he explained why this is important he wrote, “it’s a nod to the marvels in technological advancements made since Orfelia first ignited the world of Forensic Toxicology into reality” but did not explain who Orfelia was. While forensic students know who Orfelia was, other people who have never taken forensics will not know who he is. His article was a great read.
I chose this article because drugs are very prevalent in life. People could learn if a person was injected with a date rape drug or if someone overdosed. My impression reading this was that this new research can change all of forensic toxicology. This changed my life because it demonstrates how many cases people receive where drugs are the main cause of death. This puts into perspective how dangerous and deadly they are.
