Long Island Woman Who Vanished 50 Years Ago Dug up From Cop Boyfriend's Basement.

Augustine, Seth. “Long Island Woman Who Vanished 50 Years Ago Dug up From Cop Boyfriend's Basement.” Forensic Magazine, Forensic Magazine, 5 Apr. 2018, 12:40, www.forensicmag.com/news/2018/04/long-island-woman-who-vanished-50-years-ago-dug-cop-boyfriends-basement.

This week I’m reviewing the article “Long Island Woman Who Vanished 50 Years Ago Dug up From Cop Boyfriend’s Basement” which was written by Seth Augustine for Forensics Magazine. Fifty years ago in 1966 Louise Pietrewicz cleared and closed her bank account of funds a day before she disappeared forever. The only thing she left was her purse on the side of the road and a rocky marriage. The case has been left unsolved for over 51 years until a tip came from the woman Louise's husband had and affair with contacted police. This led investigators to use new ground-penetrating sonar to find the full skeleton. Lead investigators from the police department commented that “Cold cases are always, always in play. We’re always looking at information we obtain.” Police had previously dug up the residence in 2013, but failed to find anything. When they found the skeleton forensic investigators were able to trace the skeletons DNA to the daughter of Louise. The person of interest was Louise's Husband who died in 1982, so no arrests were made.
This story is very relevant to our progress made with forensic technology. Recently cold cases across the world have been solved with new and advanced technology. Louise’s murder was found with a new sonar detection device. This progress overturned a previous attempt at finding her body. Advancements in forensic technology are helping these cases whether its advancement in DNA identification or new chemical tests. The upgrades in technology are helping to bring justice to these victims and cases who would have otherwise been left unsolved.
Overall, Augustine did a pretty good job at the current event. However, he wasn't very specific in talking about the general information of the case. He talked about how she disappeared, and how her body was found with sonar technology. He left much other contextual and outside information to be desired. He could've added information about the investigation or the technology they used. However, it still was very informative and interesting about the crime overall.

This article (analyzed by Ryan Staunton) was written by Seth Augustine for the Forensics Magazine. It goes into a case that had been going on for almost 50 years and which finally was conclusively finished. What I liked about his analysis was that he made the historical context every clear and gave background on the case itself and then went into the modern forensics work. Since people have wide arrays and levels of interest in the different parts of forensic science, it makes it more interesting. He also chose a good quote from the lead investigator. It made the whole analysis feel more involved. He also emphasized on why this case is important, even though the culprit has been dead for around 35 years. It matters because science such as this can be used to answer and give closure to families, as well as providing the public a sense of trust that the truth will be found out.
There are a few things that he could have improved upon. I would have wanted to see a little bit more scientific analysis and explanation in his analysis. It would have been interesting to read a little bit about how they were able to identify her since we have been studying these subjects. It would have also been interesting to explore why the police did not look in his house when she first went missing as extensively. And as a slight improvement, he could have added another quote.
Overall I found this analysis to be very good. I thought that it was important that these cases are covered because it provides a sense of hope for the families whose loved ones are still missing and whose lives are still defined by these kinds of crimes. It also shows to potential criminals that the technology to catch them is growing and provides a greater trust in justice.

For this comment, I decided to read a review by Ryan. He reviewed “Long Island Woman Who Vanished 50 Years Ago Dug up From Cop Boyfriend's Basement”. Throughout the review, Ryan did a great job giving a lot of background information which helped me really understand the article much more. Another thing that I thought Ryan did very well on was adding a quote to the review so we could see how the author wrote. This added more evidence to the review along with the background that he incorporated. Ryan also did a great job of choosing an article because it connected back to the section that we did in our class about bones.
Although this article review was very good, there are a couple of things that I would change about it. I thought that when he was connecting it back to the forensic class he could have used a better connection. I thought that the bones section that we review would have been more relevant. Another thing that I thought he could have done better was that he could have incorporated his own view into the review. It was mostly of just the author's opinion and facts and it could have been more interesting if he added his own opinion.
Overall, his review of the article was fantastic. He used great evidence to really make sure we understood the article when he added the quote and gave us great background information. One thing that stood out to me while reading this review was that they dug up the same area but did not find anything but since technology has come so far they used a system in which found the skull. Although there was no arrest made since the husband died in 1982, it still was very interesting to see how investigators use technology to help them solve their cases.

Ryan’s review of “Long Island Woman Who Vanished 50 Years Ago Dug up From Cop Boyfriend's Basement” was a very interesting review. First of all, it really helped that he had the exact details of the crime scene, talking about the place where it occurred and even stating how they came to reopen the cold case. In addition, the fact that he had a thorough explanation of why this article is important to society incorporated in his review gave me some additional information about it. Finally, Ryan did a really good job on going even further into the topic and talking about how the use of new technology can help solve many cold cases.
Although this review was very interesting, one way it could have been made better is that Ryan could have talked more about who exactly was this woman and why she could say where the body was buried. By reading it over and adding a few more details, he could have avoided this problem. Moreover, I would have added more information on other new technologies that have helped solve other cold cases as I do not have much knowledge about it. By adding one or two sentences about that topic he could have made his review even more thorough.
Overall, this review was captivating and thought-provoking. I had read an article that talked about new technologies, but never about ones that help forensics cases, so I was intrigued when I read Ryan’s review. Thus, learning about this was very enlightening and taught me many new things. Reading this review made me realize that cold cases are never “cold,” they can always be solved .

After reading my classmate Ryan’s review on “Long Island Woman Who Vanished 50 Years Ago Dug up From Cop Boyfriend's Basement” written by Seth Augustine, it opened my eyes to the advantages of technology and how far it has come. Ryan did a really good job on giving descriptive background information, which helped me get a better understanding of the article. Also he added a lot of good and important quotes within his review, this helped bring other point of views into the review, along with the authors perspective on the matter.

However, the review was well written but he could have added more components i n order to make it better. I thought that he could have added his own perspective on the matter, the article was strictly from the article and lacked Ryan’s personal opinion. Also he could have added more information from what we have done in class so far, it would have made it more interesting to see the connections.

Ryan’s review was really good and interesting to read, with all of his information and well formed sentences, made it and overall fantastic review. He even pointed out areas of missing information that could have helped the case. The article showed me the importance technology has in the forensic field, and how developing new technology will vasty effect forensic cases.

I thought Ryan did a really good job of explaining the events and background of the case, and I think he also made some very good points about how it fits into the big picture of forensics and why it’s relevant today even though the murder investigation itself is over 50 years old. Another thing he did very well was keeping the review brief so that it was easy to read while still being informative.
I don’t have any suggestions for what Ryan could have done better, since it doesn’t really seem like anything is missing from the review. I would say that I’d like to know more about the circumstances of the murder, like why Louise emptied her bank account the day before disappearing and why her boyfriend murdered her, but Ryan’s critique said that much of the contextual information wasn’t included in the article so he couldn’t have included it.
The thing that I found most surprising, and kind of confusing, was that the tip came from a woman with whom Louise’s husband was having an affair. Did the article or Ryan misspeak and accidentally call her boyfriend her husband, or did she have a boyfriend and a husband? Or is the boyfriend her ex, or someone she abandoned her husband for? And either way, how did her husband’s mistress know who killed her and where the body was? There’s still a lot that doesn’t make sense.

Ryan’s review of his article was very well written. He did a very good job of providing enough details in his summary so that we could understand the article. I also appreciated that he included a quote in his article to help give us a direct point of view. I think his points on why the article was relevant given the fact that the case was 50 years ago was also well thought out.
Even though Ryan did a great job, there were two areas in which he could improve. It would’ve been nice to hear about Ryan’s personal opinion of the whole situation. I also wish he could’ve discussed our knowledge of bones in his connection.
Overall Ryan did a good job and I was very surprised to know that because of new technological developments we can help solve a case from 50 years ago.

Ryan reviewed the article “Long Island Woman Who Vanished 50 Years Ago Dug up From Cop Boyfriend’s Basement”I thought the article review was comprehensive and well written, which made it easy to understand. He also provided good quotes that furthered my understanding of what was going on and did a great job relating the article to forensics.

Ryan could have gone into more detail on the actual forensic practices in the case instead of giving a brief overview, but other than that I don’t think there was anything else he could have done better.
I thought Ryans review was interesting to read because it was just another example of how new scientific advances are helping to solve cases from the past and provide closure for everyone involved, especially given the victim of this crime had a young daughter who grew up never knowing what happened to her mother.

Ryan Staunton did a very good job reviewing the article “Long Island Woman Who Vanished 50 Years ago Dug up From Cop Boyfriend’s Basement” written by Seth Augustine. The article goes over how 50 years ago Louise Pietrewicz went missing and the case was eventually dropped and marked unsolved. 51 years later her husband's mistress tipped off the police and they used sonar to locate the body in the basement.

Ryan did a very good job with the review. He had a good understanding of the article. He also was very good at giving detail and explaining. He also added a lot of dates so we knew when everything occured.

One thing he can improve on is adding some more depth. Also, there needs to be a bit more.

One thing I found really interesting is how police used sonar to look into the ground to find the skeleton. Overall, really good job by Ryan.

Ryan’s review of the article “Long Island Woman Who Vanished 50 Years Ago Dug up From Cop Boyfriend's Basement.” was very well written and interesting to read. I liked how Ryan gave some background information in the beginning of his review about the article so the readers would understand what was going on. I also liked how Ryan made a clear and obvious connection to our current society which made the article even more interesting. Lastly, I think Ryan;s choice of article was very intriguing because it related to one of the labs that we had done in class.
I think Ryan review could’ve been better if he included more quotes from the article in his reviews so he could prove a stronger point. I also think he could've found a better connection to our lab rather than the one he stated.
I think It’s very ' how science is advancing a lot now and it makes me think about how advanced technology will be years from now!

Ryan did a very nice job with his current event review on the article “Long Island Woman Who Vanished 50 Years Ago Dug up From Cop Boyfriend's Basement,” by Seth Augustine. I decided to review his report as the title was rather intriguing and posed many questions. There are many good techniques he uses throughout the report. One example is how he explains the detailed background of the specific case. His focus on this factor of the original report is important as it gives readers an insight on the specific details of the case. Another aspect of Ryan’s writing that was done rather well was when he explained how forensic advancements can be beneficial to cold cases. New techniques came in handy for investigators who then discovered the skeleton of Louise Pietrewicz. Lastly, I appreciated how Ryan was specific when discussing the negative aspects of the original article. He specifically discussed that the author provided limited information on the case involving Louise Pietrewicz. This showed readers his deep understanding of the source material.

Overall, Ryan’s report was extremely interesting and informative, however there are some details that he could tweak and add to make the current event report even that much better. I recommend that he adds more quotes to his article. Considering that he only included one quote, it would definitely be beneficial to add more direct information from the original article. Also, it would have been beneficial for him to go into further detail about the new forensic techniques that the forensic investigators used to find the skeleton of Louise Pietrewicz. This would have supplemented his current event report with even more information and details considering the case.

Ryan’s report was very informative and I learned extensively about this specific case concerning investigators finding the skeleton of Louise Pietrewicz. Before reading the report, I had little knowledge about how Forensic investigators used new techniques to crack open the cold case involving the skeleton of Louise Pietrewicz. After reading Ryan’s report, I see how important it is for forensic scientists to discover more techniques to bring justice to the victims of the many cold cases across America.

Current Event 22- Reviewing Ryan Staunton

Augustine, Seth. “Long Island Woman Who Vanished 50 Years Ago Dug up From Cop Boyfriend's Basement.” Forensic Magazine, Forensic Magazine. Web. 5 Apr. 2018. www.forensicmag.com/news/2018/04/long-island-woman-who-vanished-50-years-ago-dug-cop-boyfriends-basement
For this review that I choose to do I decided to read a review by Ryan Staunton. Ryan reviewed “Long Island Woman Who Vanished 50 Years Ago Dug up From Cop Boyfriend's Basement” which I thought was a very great compelling review that Ryan was able to do. The first factor which I liked was that Ryan did a great job giving massive amount in regards to depth which helped me really understand the article as well as to think critically throughout. This turned out to be critical because for one to write a good article one must have depth. A second factor that I thought Ryan did very well on was adding quotes to his current event which proved to provide professional validism throughout his work. This added more evidence to the review along with the background that he incorporated. A third and final factor which I thought Ryan Staunton did a great job at was both using great grammar and great spelling when he wrote this review as it reflects in his writing.
While Ryan’s review was very good, there are a couple of things that I would address for the next review he does in the future. The first factor which I thought Ryan could have done better was that when he was connecting it back to the forensic class he could have used a better connection to our world and the ramifications this could produce with criminal investigators in the foreseeable future. I think if Ryan improves on this his review will transform from being really good to being an elite current event. A second factor which I believe Ryan could have done better was that he could have incorporated his own view into the review to give the reader a position so that when they are reading it they can relate to Ryan’s perspective. I believe by doing this Ryan can generate a balance between the author's opinion and facts with his own opinion which in my mind would improve his current event because it would make the reader more eager to read his article fully.
Overall from reading Ryan Staunton's review the overall impression that I took away was that I was impressed with work that Ryan put into his article. One factor that really impressed me while reading this review was that this review makes me more aware that not always are cops dependable to solving murders especially when technology is not up to date like it was in the 1980’s when this crime occurred. This review impacts my life because it makes me disturbed that when the crime occurred in 1982 there have been no arrests warrants made since the husband died which is disturbing as well as it reflects poorly on the police and federal investigators who were trying to solve this crime. I picked this article because I am a fan regarding the Forensics Magazine and with that reason not only was the article great but it also was an impressive current event written by Ryan and I was impressed with the work that Ryan did which reflects his high level when it comes to writing.
